Each panda is about 14 inches tall EACH PANDA:
Patterns Include 1/4-inch seam allowances where needed. To sew darts or seams, straight-stitch by machine or backstitch by hand, placing right sides together and backstitching or securing thread ends at the beginning and end of each seam. Body:
Cut and discard ribbing from white sock. Turn foot of sock wrong side out and position it so toe stitching is at the top, heel is underneath and opening lies flat as In Fig. 1. Hand- or machine-stitch a dart in each side, beginning at opening, 3/4 inch from fold, and stitching to end of heel turning on each side as shown.
Firmly stuff body until it measures about 10 inches high and 12 to 13 inches in diameter. Turn opening edges under 1/4 Inch and ladder-stitch closed.
 Cutting:
Measure 4 inches down from top of body and wrap yarn around neck twice. Pull tight, knot ends together and cut yarn ends close. Trace ear and eye patch patterns onto tracing paper and cut out. Turn black socks wrong side out. Referring to Fig. 2, use chalk pencil to mark cutting lines for legs and arms and trace around ear pattern onto each sock and eye patch pattern onto one sock. Arms/Legs:
Cut arm/leg section on cutting lines. Use chalk pencil to mark stitching lines 1/4 inch from cut edges as shown in Fig. 2, curving ends to fold. Stitch on marked lines, leaving opening for turning as indicated.
Turn arms and legs right side out. Stuff arms and legs until each measures about 6-1/2 inches long and 5-1/2 to 6 inches in diameter. Turn opening edges under 1/4 inch and ladder-stitch closed.
Position arms 1/2 inch below neck on sides of body. Using the soft sculpture needle and a double strand of heavy-duty thread, insert needle through first arm, then body and second arm, as shown in Fig. 3. Stitch back and forth several times to secure, pulling thread tight and tying ends in a firm knot. Repeat for legs, positioning their upper edges about 5 inches below neck (stitching through body will be at upper point of darts). Ears:
Cut ears through both layers of each black sock foot as marked in Fig. 2. With right sides together, stitch ears together along curved edges. Turn right side out. Turn open edge under 1/4 inch, make fold in each ear front and stitch layers of opening closed. Face:
Cut eye patches through both layers on one black sock foot as marked in Fig. 2.
Referring to photograph for placement, position eye patches about 1/4 inch below toe stitching. Slip-stitch around edge of each patch with black thread and tapestry needle.
To attach eyes, use the soft sculpture needle and a double strand of heavy-duty thread to take two small stitches at one eye marking on eye patch to anchor thread, insert needle at eye marking and go through head to opposite eye marking. Take a small stitch and go back to first eye marking, pulling thread to make indentation for eyes. Attach first button, then stitch through head and attach second button. Stitch back and forth between buttons several times, then anchor thread under one button with several small stitches. Pull needle through back of head and cut off thread end so end will be buried in sock.
Position ears at top of head, leaving about 1-3/4 inches between them and curving them down the side of the head. Hand-stitch in place.
Use embroidery needle and three strands of black floss to satin-stitch nose and stem- stitch mouth as shown in Fig. 4, positioning nose about 3/8 inch from patches and outlining nose with stem stitch if desired.
GIRL PANDA: Hat:
Hand- or machine-gather both edges of 7/8-inch ribbon. Pull up gathers in ribbon to form hatband for crown of hat. Glue in place. Also, glue flowers to hat and bird to flowers as shown in photograph.
Tie l-l/2-inch ribbon into bow around her neck, trimming ends diagonally.
Glue hat toward back of head.
BOY PANDA:
Trace cap patterns onto tracing paper and cut out. Cut out fabrics as directed on pattern pieces. From plaid fabric, also cut a 2- x 12-inch piece, a 2-1/2-inch square and two 3- x 9-1/2-inch pieces for tie. Cap:
Two crowns are constructed, then joined as follows for a reversible cap. Stitch one side of two crown pieces together from lower edge to dot. Repeat to form four sets of pieces. Open up one set and place it right sides together with second set. Stitch from lower edge to dot on each side edge. Repeat to form second crown.
Stitch brim pieces together along curved edge. Clip curves, turn right side out and press.
Matching raw edges of brim to raw edges of crowns, pin brim between crowns, lining notch with seams on both crown layers. Stitch outside edge, leaving opening for turning as shown in Fig. 5. Turn right side out Turn opening edges under 1/4 inch and edgestitch around edge of crown.
Use scrap of plaid fabric to cover button and stitch to center of crown sections at intersection of seams on right side of cap.
Position cap on head gluing edge In place if desired and folding In excess at sides and front.
Tie:
Fold all tie pieces (see Cutting Note below) in half lengthwise and stitch long edges together. Turn right side out and press.
For neck band, glue 12-inch piece around his neck with ends at center front. Fold short ends of 9-1/2-inch pieces so they overlap at center and glue. Match overlapped centers and wrap centers together with folded 2-1/2- Inch piece, gluing ends of short piece under on wrong side of bow. Glue to center front neck over ends of neck band.
Cutting Note:
Two pattern pieces for Boy Panda's cap are on patterns printed using the link above. From plaid fabric for Boy Panda's tie, also cut a 2- x 12-inch piece, a 2-1/2-inch square and two 3- x 9- 1/2-inch pieces for tie.
