Cut pattern pieces along solid cutting lines. (To make the patterns easier to trace onto the fabric you may glue the pattern sheets onto poster board before cutting them out).

Note: To make larger or smaller chairs you can increase or decrease the pattern using a graphics program.

Fold the fabric in half wrong side out (see figure 1). Lay out the fabric pattern pieces, ½" apart, placing ruffle on fold as shown. Trace around all pieces except ruffle and tab pieces (these will be your stitching lines).

Cut ruffle and tab pieces along cutting lines. Cut all other fabric pieces ¼ inch from the line traced onto the fabric.

Marking and cutting the cardboard:

On the cardboard, trace around each of the insert pieces. Label and cut out.

Stitch around the back / side section, along tracing line, leaving the bottom open. Trim the seam allowances to 1/8 inch and clip the V-areas. Turn the piece right side out. Making sure seams are exactly at the edges, pin the layers together. Stitch along stitching lines to form three slots (see figure 2). Insert the back and side cardboard pieces into the slots. Add small pieces of stuffing to evenly pad one side of each cardboard form. Stitch the edge closed. Trim next to stitching using pinking shears or zigzag across raw edges. You can also use a surger to finish the bottom edge. Set pieces aside.

Form the pull-tab by first pressing one strip in half lengthwise, right side out. Then open it and press each long cut edge to the center crease. Fold the strip in half again and press. Stitch along the long open side close to the edge. Fold into a flat loop and join the cut ends with basting stitches. Pin or baste the pull-tab to the right side of front seat section (see figure 3). With right sides together stitch around curved edge of front/seat section, along tracing line, leaving bottom edge open. Trim seam allowance to 1/8 inch and turn piece right side out. Insert cardboard seat section and add small amounts of stuffing to pad one side of the cardboard seat. Do not add stuffing below the stitching line. Insert cardboard front section (do not add padding) and finish bottom edge as you did the back/side section. Top stitch along stitching lines between the two cardboard pieces.

Stitch around three sides of the base section, along tracing line, leaving one side open. Trim seam allowances to 1/8 inch and clip corners. Turn right side out. Insert base cardboard section and finish the remaining edge as you did the back/side section.

Fold the back/side section along stitching. Attach the seat/front section using hand stitching (see figure 4). Using a glue gun attach base to bottom of chair folding over the finished edges (see figure 5).

Make a narrow 1/8-inch hem along both long edges of ruffle. Gather top edge by machine basting (loosen the top tension slightly) ¼ inch from edge. Pull the bobbin thread and gather evenly to fit around the chair. With the glue gun starting at center back and folding under raw edges, glue ruffle to bottom edge of chair so the bottom of the ruffle is even with the bottom edge of chair.
