Default Acid Reflux
Old 07-24-2008, 05:05 PM   #1 (permalink)

Well, I was just diagnosed with acid reflux. I ended up in the ER last night cause DH thought I was having a heart attack and made me go.

They took blood and ran tests, etc and that's how I found out about the acid reflex.

They changed my meds, told me to sleep with my head elevated, no caffeine after supper and to quit smoking.

Done ok so far with the first 3 LOL.

Just wondering if anyone else on here has this and what types of food they eat or don't eat to help prevent this. I 've had pain all day today and it's driving me crazy.

I haven't hardly eaten anything cause it hurts. I did eat a bowl of soup for supper tonight and a can of peaches at lunchtime.

Any help would be appreciated.

Deb sorry to hear you have acid reflux...I have had it for years...I use Gaviscon Max Relief, the chewable tablets and they work great for me when it gets really bad...they are made for Acid Reflux and heartburn...Just watch what you eat.Avoid spicy or greasy foods...And No Caffiene...Try to avoid salt also...bottle water may contain sodium so try to get some that has no sodium in it...

I hope you feel better soon...

Smiles & hugs

I have it too and use Zantac tablets 70 mg but now they have 150 mg. They last 24 hours two things that sets mine off is bananas or chocolate. I only recently heard that smoking causes it. Our friend had his gall bladder out and quit smoking but still had it. But he was overweight at least 150#. Hope you feel better soon.

I'm feeling somewhat better today. The meds must be finally kicking in. I was in pain all day yesterday and into the night. It finally subsided sometime during the night and so far hasn't returned. I haven't had any caffeine but of course now I have a headache from withdrawal. LOL

<steps up on soapbox>Acid reflux is one of those conditions that many doctors seem to diagnose anyone with indigestion-like symptoms. Many people 'with acid reflux' that I've talked to DO NOT have the condition. Please research this and make sure you do not have something else going on. There are a number of unique and specific symptoms that accompanies acid reflux - please make sure you do have them. I have heard anecdotes of women being diagnosed with reflux when in reality they were having a heart attack.<climbs down off soap box to offer suggestions>

OK, my doctor failed to explain what this condition means and the words 'trigger foods' never came up. Some of that was most likely due to the fact I was diagnosed pre-Internet and when many docs where still learning about it themselves.

Here's my absolute no-no's as in if I eat them I WILL ALWAYS get indigestion, cough like a dog's bark, and/or throw up...

Oranges in any form,
Milk
Apple Juice (I love apples and they seem a little less toxic but I almost always pay for eating them whether raw or cooked in a pie - some things are just worth the pain )
Most tomato products but especially Spaghetti sauce (mild salsa seems more tolerable)
Mint (this is a mean one since toothpaste and most anti-indigestion things make use of mint flavoring)
Fruity flavored candies and indigestion tablets (took me a while to figure out the Tums I was using were actually making things worse - I now use their Cocoa and Creme flavor)
Certain spices - you will learn which ones you can and can't, I can't do cardamom and the seeds/spice they put in pizza sausage

There are sites on the net that have more complete lists and you will find it most strange what you can and can't eat. Spaghetti sauce is 100% bad for me, yet ketchup is often doable. Stuff that's bitter is poison to me and I've developed problems with anything that is very sweet.

It will take a while but once you start identifying those foods which bother you, you will find you can avoid many episodes by controlling your diet.

I've found if I'm having a particularly bad day that eating a plain starch seems to help. Saltines aren't just for morning sickness. Popcorn has also worked for me.

I have Gastirtis and use Prilosec OTC. It's worked wonders since last year. I watch what I eat. I don't eat fresh pineapple anymore or anything with tons of acid. I limit my tomtetoes prodect consumption. I hardly drink caffine, but when I do I am fine. I have found I can eat homemade spicy food, but not authentic mexican or anything like that.

Try what I use. My bf had to go on it as well. He has stopped coughing now and is doing fine. We ourselves just had an ER visit on friday morning.

Went to my Dr. this morning. He put me back on Prilosec twice a day. I have pain in the middle upper part of my abdomen. Only really hurts when I breath heavy or when I'm walking. He said if that doesn't go away in a couple of weeks to call him. He's going to order tests for me to check out my gall bladder.

If it's not one thing it's another.
