Hi Cecil and to the community!!! My husband has a Hyetal Hernia along with a few more hernia's in his stomach. The dr put him on meds but it hasn't done a lot of good. He's had 4 blockages in the past year that ended him up in the hospital with an NG tube down him. That's about the only way to get rid of the blockages without surgery and the dr's say he won't survive another surgery. If you have any more questions, just ask, I'll be happy to ask him about it for you.
Hugs & Happiness~~~ Paula

Default Hiatal Hernia
Old 11-07-2007, 12:08 AM   #3 (permalink)

You might want to check out the Mayo Clinic website
Mayo Clinic medical information and tools for healthy living - MayoClinic.com in the search box type Hiatal hernia this is a very good site ...particularly the self care section!
My Mom had this type of hernia for many years she had the surgery 3 yrs ago (at the age of 86) and she has been pain free. Before the surgery she pretty much followed the self care section info along with medications. One of the most positive self care steps was the elevation of the head of her bed...she had blocks of wood (about 6 inches)..under the legs of the head of the bed...takes some getting use to being at that angle but it helps!

Thanks so very much for your concern and post....Your Mom sure deserves a lot of credit for being so brave....86...that's marvelous ! I've had my bed tilted for the past couple of years...sleep on side...cannot sleep on back....In coma few months ago...on Ventilator..was given up on coming out of it....I asked all the Dr.'s what caused the coma...They all said "I don"t know!"....Lady Practioner gave me her opinion of stomach in esophagus..pushing on diaphagam..which pushes on lungs...but, no one will seek into it !...Apparently...will have to wait for help when the next severe attack happens...just a matter of time !....& pray I make it...In pain everyday....can't make it to the mail box without pain & tears.....Well, enough of me.....Read material on Mayo Clinic...Give your Mom my respects....Thank you again....C

My mom had no choice...her problems went beyond the Hiatal Hernia...she had a complete blockage of the opening from her stomach to her small intestines as well...she got to the point she couldn't eat or drink anything including water....she had in simple terms a bypass ....it was either that or die (operation was risky as well...but thankfully she pulled thru and has had (knock on wood) no more "stomach" problems....with this operation they also cut the acid producing ducts or something so she doesn't produce as much acid.
