Default Please read if you're having surgery!
Old 11-28-2006, 07:45 AM   #1 (permalink)

I didn't know anyone this happened to, until now!

This is part of an e-mail I received from my cousin!

I had a scheduled Same Day Surgery endometrial ablasion last Tuesday. I have been anemic and Dr. said I had endometrial polyps. The ablasion involves lasering off the endometrial lining, thus ending the problem. I was in by 8am and on my way home by 2 pm, and was just fine. Next day woke up feeling fine, until around 11:30 am when I had a chill.By 2 pm I had a slight fever, not quite enough to call the Dr., but by 5pm my temp was 104. I called the doctor and she said to go right to the ER. Upon arrival my heart beat was over 150 and I had a UTI as well as pneumonia in both lungs. I was admitted, of course with a round of IV antibiotics. By Thursday, which was the next day, all of my blood cultures were positive for both Staph and Strep. An infectious Disease consult was called and he was there within an hour. Does that give you any idea how upset they were?? By Saturday I was in isolation, they found VFE which is a "Super" bacteria which is not responsive to too many antibiotics. Meanwhile, my blood pressure kept going up (196/109) and down. Herpes popped out overnight onto my lips, in my mouth and toungue. I had to be 48 hours on antibiotics that worked before I could go home. Now I'm here, but can't be in crowds and can't be around sick people. But I am grateful to be home. Upon discharge my doctor said there was some cross contamination during surgery which is how the bacteria got into my bloodstream as well as my bladder. See how fast these thing happen?

This is ridiculous! I've heard of this happening alot, but I guess until it hits home you don't pay too much attention. I heard on GMA to ask the Dr. if he washed his hands and ask the nurses if the equipment has been steralized! Sounds silly, but darn, when you're life it at risk, you ask anyway!

Yea this is actually alot more common than people think!

You are more likely to get sick while in the hospital! Then you start having open wounds and such and you are asking for trouble!

Then you add the chance that they do the surgery on the wrong thing!!! Like amputate the wrong leg or remove your breast and you are suppose to have carpal tunnel surgery!

It happens!!

These super viruses are really bad! Antibiotics won't work on them and it people have to suffer!! So scary!!

A lot of the bacteria etc. have built up resistance to antibiotics. We should not take any antibiotics until absolutely necessary. The doctor's here have quit giving them out unless there is a definite need.

Hospitals are notorious for being the breeding ground for bacteria.

MGF, I had to chuckle a bit when you said ;doing surgery on the wrong thing;. My DH was sooooo paranoid when he had his knee surgery that they would do the wrong knee. He told every person he talked to in the hospital it was his LEFT knee. Acutally, when the first nurse came in to tell us what was going to happen, he brought a black permanent sharpie marker with him and wrote ;YES; on the left knee so there would be no question. I thought that was pretty smart.

I have heard that some places are actually making you sign the place that you are having surgery on. ( or having a relative sign if you can't reach it)

When I had thyroid surgery the dr that did the surgery had breast xrays all over the place. Seems that his specailty was breast reconstruction. So when I went into surgery I had my arms crossed at my chest~I wanted to make sure he got the right thing!!!

When I came to I felt to make sure things were in the correct place and no extra bandages!

All was well!!

Heya everyone, I did a research about LASIK thing since im planning to compact to the procedure next month ( im a little nervous about it) that is why i decided to rummage around facts as I can in regards to its advantages and disadvantages outcome. And I found out that the disadvantages of it like the healing of the eye thing involves a careful regimen by the patient and close monitoring by your surgeon for several months following the procedure. Also, depending on the size of the patient's pupil, "night glare" may occur in low light, especially in the days immediately following your procedure. Furthermore, each patient has individual healing characteristics so it means that not all people done this had or have the same effects after or same healing experience after but in the long run I also found the advantages of it, the entire procedure is painless and very fast - less than ten minutes, during which use of the laser beam lasts about 15 - 40 seconds, 98% of typical patients achieve 20/40 or better vision, which enables the patient to drive and participate in sports without the need for glasses or contact lenses, corneal strength is preserved and vision remains stable years after LASIK, it corrects myopia with or without astigmatism, and hyperopia with or without Astigmatism . So I do believe that this will serve as I guide to everyone who plan to have it. BTW wish me luck for my surgery next month im 102 % sure that I will go for it. I want to see and do things without those glasses and contacts. Wish me luck. Ohh BTW here’s a link my2020 in case you want to have a wide understanding about LASIK.

Our doctors put their initials on the place where the surgery is to be when they come into the pre-op room to talk to you and check on things.

My dh has had numerous one day surgeries because of having stents (7of them) put into arteries. And a number of colonoscopies because of a cancerous polyp. He has been lucky so far as he hasn't gotten any staph or strep infections. This sort of thing happens way too often.
