Question Help with mosaic gems and solder on wine glasses
Old 02-28-2008, 03:31 PM   #1 (permalink)

Hello! This is my very first post and was hoping someone would be able to give me some insight. I have decorated plain wine glasses using mosaic gems and solder. I decided to make these for gifts because I had purchase some similar a few years ago and use them a LOT. Every time I break them out I get TONS of compliments..so I thought, what a perfect gift that I could make for those closest to me!! They turned out beautiful..but then the trouble began. THE GLUE!!! Gems and solder started falling off and coming loose as soon as people/myself would use them. My first mistake was using regular glue and a glue gun..DUH! Then, I researched and tried using Aleene's Platinum Bond Glass and Bead glue..which is supposed to be made for these specific projects..failure number 2. I moved on to Beacon 527 glue which claims to be water resistant and also good for slick, glass surfaces..failure THREE. Desperation got the best of me and I even applied Gorilla Glue to the things! Not only did they then look hideous from the inside, the beads and wire STILL fell off. Severe frustration has officially set in. Help! What am I doing wrong? Does anyone have any idea what type of glue actually works? The ones I purchased a few years ago still have held their beads on..and that's after multiple washings, so I know there is an adhesive out there that works. Knowledge? Insight? Educate me please!!!! Displayed is one I had made and have just used for decoration..this will give you an idea of what I'm describing.

Hello!

I am the voice of experience here with gems and solder. I have been doing this for years on serving pieces, plates, wine glasses, wine caraf's photo frames, large galvanized buckets, salt and pepper shakers, glass candle holders olive oil bottles. The list goes on and on for possibilities. I have always used E600 glue. I have never had anything fall off. I once wanted to change a color scheme on a serving spoon and could not pry it off. I kept the gem there. I have used it on a mailbox that has been outside for 3 years. TRUST me on the E600. I would NEVER use anything else.

Good luck.

I like the design on the glasses. I have never brought it down the stem. I like that!

Candace
