Default ashtray lights
Old 12-31-2003, 12:31 PM   #1 (permalink)

Hello everyone. I have seen on various craft forums pictures of what I believe are called "ash tray lights"...evidently made with several glass ash trays & strings of mini lights. I need someone to tell me where to go to get the directions for making these lights.

these are easy ones to make and, like the glass block lights can be simple or elaborate when you finish them up.

you need 2 glass ashtrays that match and either 20 count or 35 count lights - do not have to be white - they make up kinda interesting when you use the multi or colored lights, but most prefer to use white and the white wires are preferred too. i make up 2 sizes 5 in for 20 count and 7 in for 35 count. they sold pretty well for me - small ones @ 12-13.50 and large at 15-16.50. depending on venue.

directions - my spin on them......

i hot glue some of the lights to the bottom ashtray so the wires are a little more manageable. i just stick som hot glue on the plastic lamp holder and stick it down for a couple seconds til it grabs. once i have some of them down, i can manage the rest of them by tucking. the cord/plug goes out through one of the grooves for the cigarette to rest in. i use a coule small dabs of glue - e-6000 or even hot glue, but just a little in case the lights need to be changed out. i have seen folks that used rubber bands to secure the 2 together also and no glue. i use the hot glue and cross wrap from 2 directions with some colored craft wire. the wire or rubber bands get hidden with the bow.

finishing can be simple or complex - i just have a friend tie some bows on mine, but other folks add all kinds of things to theirs. the lamps do get warm underneath and i have seen that some folks put feet under theirs, but i have not had any problems without using the feet. here's my version of them and hope this was clear enough have fun with these.

a couple more thoughts on these - i can't tell you how easy these are to make, once you get a handle on dealing with the wire.

these do not just have to be for xmas, either. depending upon how you finish them and the colors of lites, etc. they can have a greater appeal(like maybe for valentine's day). for those of you who have things on display, you might try one or two of these as they sell well when they are seen. i do have mine on my site, but the pix do not show them off as well.

also, you can make them up with other than clear ashtrays. i found some really nice blue ones i used and they sold for me too.
