Post Hubby bought me a sewing machine, HELP
Old 04-25-2009, 11:48 PM   #1 (permalink)

There is one problem, I have never sewn a stitch in my life.
I have been reading a lot about sewing but, if anybody has any
hints or help, it would be definately appreciated. He just bought me they call it a Singer starter for newbies to sewing. I live 5 minutes from Joanne Fabric and craft super store. I really don't want to spend the money for the classes because a friend joined one of the classes and said it was not worth it all all.
Also, I need a list of all the things I need like a seam ripper, etc.
I could use any help at all. Thanks a bunch, Twizzels,,,,,, Lori

Hi Lori, I don't sew a lot, mostly home dec (pillows etc.). I would take the class and ask lots of questions. I took one class and learned quite a bit. I feel that one of the most important instruments are really good scissors for cutting material. These are not to be used for anything else. Guard them with your life. Paper will dull them.

Good luck with your sewing. There are many ladies here who can help you as they are a lot more knowledgeable than I am.

Hi Busia,
Thank you for getting back to me. I was talking it
over with hubby and he even thought it was a good idea
to take the class. I know I will not become a seamstress, lol,
but I do want to make some pocketbooks, tote bags, who knows,
maybe someday I will make be able to make the Christmas cat and
Christmas tree that I have seen. They are so cute. I just have to get a list
of the items I need to start like a pin cushion, etc.
Have a great day, Lori

I do agree with the scissors. Make a tag on it so your dh/kids know not to use it for something else.
Buy some cheap material and start with simple things. Just sewing for- and backwards, use the zigzag etc. to learn how the machine works and use the class to learn about things you don't know yet or are uncertain of.
And ask experienced sewers for advice and tips, like putting pins transverse in stead of with the line of sewing will prevent the material from sliding.
Good luck

Afke

Hi Afke,
Thank you for giving some words of wisdom also.
Any help is definately appreciated. I bought a very good
pair of fiskars today at Joanne fabric and craft. They were
more than I wanted to pay but I guess they will be good
in the long run. Thanks again, Lori

Lori, I am been sewing for 60 years so I know about sewing. Most of the people who work at the fabric store can tell you what you need to get started, like pins, measuring tape, thread and fabric. There are also books that you can buy if you don't want to take a class. Some classes are good, but most are geared to someone who already knows their way around a sewing machine. Is there a quilting group in your area? If so, contact someone from there and these people are more than willing to just help you get started. You need someone who will sit down with you and walk you through the how to's of sewing. Good luck and if you want to know something more and I can be of help, please PM me and I will try to get you through it.

What Bearlady has said is really good advice. A class may be good but maybe if you go to your local library you can find some basic books also to help get yourself started once you get your machine. I have an old one, "Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing".

I have self-taught myself around 20 years ago and have never had to go to a class. I learned from doing and my first projects were not that complicated as well as not being all that good. Start doing small, simple projects.

My SIL just purchased the same machine as you and has decided to teach herself. She picked a few Simplicity patterns thinking the name itself implied that they were simple. One she's working on is a top that has a zipper in the back and sleeves. I never would have picked that as a first project. I helped her on the sleeves. She thought that she could just stitch them around the openings, but didn't understand that she needed to gather from the one dot to the other as specified on her pattern piece and baste first before stitching. I was able to help her and she knows when she's ready for the zipper that she can give me a call.

If you know anyone experienced who is able to help you that is also a plus in your favor.

Please keep us informed on how it's going. The best of luck to you!
-Teresa

Hi
Saw your post. I could not sew when I first got my sewing machine 10 years ago but since then I have enjoyed it.
Some the useful things you can start with would be a good pair of fabric scissors, a pair of embroidery scissors, seam ripper, measuring tape, magnetic pin catcher, extra bobbins.
I think you would be able to pick up some easy sewing books from local library. Once you start sewing, you will find fusible web pretty useful as well if you plan to do embroidery, applique etc.,
Its pretty easy to pick up sewing. Good luck!
