techniques of transferring a pattern onto a quilt????????

I made a wall quilt with both black and white fabric and I would like to quilt"the end of the trail" design in the center of it put am having a hard time with tranferring the pattern onto the quilt because of the black and white fabric and getting the lines to show up on both colors...any suggestions???.I`ve tried tracing the pattern on tracing paper and pinnining it to the quilt but when I start to hand quilt it the paper tears and I cant`see the lines .I`ve also tried a transfer pen(orange) thinking it would show up on both colors but it doesn`t.I`m out of ideas...help PLEASE!! oh and carbon paper smears onto the fabric...
