Has anyone had a cat get so scared at the vet they went into shock? We had this happen last week -- routine visit for shots, but they also drew blood to monitor an ongoing problem. She did not look good when they brought her back out after drawing the blood. Her tongue was hanging out, her eyes were glassy and she was breathing very hard. When we got her out to the car she had a seizure. Took her back in and the vet gave her oxygen. We took her back to the car to get away from the doctor's office smell but sat in the car in front of the office for over an hour before we finally went home.
It has taken about a week but she now seems to be getting back to normal. I am very protective of her and as far as I am concerned I am not going to let that happen again. But I am wondering how common is this? Has anyone else ever had it happen?

I am not sure how common this problem is, I do know my friend's cat has to be sedated before she brings her to the vet.
I have many cats but never had this happen , I do have a cat that is fearful of the vet ,,but she never went through what your cat did. I am sorry she went through this, I am glad she is getting back to normal . I hope your ok too,,I can't imagine this, must of been very frightful for all.
My social worker training kicks in during a crisis -- it's afterward that I fall apart. So the cat is better and now I'm the basket case.
This has raised some issues for us but we should have a year to think about them, unless something happens that needs a vet sooner. We are one of those crazy childless couples that treat their pets like children. That causes a few problems since we don't declaw and we don't put our baby in a cage. The vet kept telling us to go get her carrier and we kept telling him we don't have one.
We live in a city so we do have options. There is a mobile vet here as well as a holistic one. I'm also researching natural ways to keep her calm.
This has also made me more determined that when the time comes she will die a natural death at home in the arms of her family -- not in terror at the vet. That's a memory I couldn't bear to live with.
I am so sorry your poor kitty kat had to go through this. I have no experience with cats, I have a dog and he loves his vet, but this is so very sad. I hope you can find the reason your kitty is so very fearful and help her through it. I wish you well and will pray for your family. Hugs to you and a tender pat for kitty.
How scary, I'm so sorry you had a bad experience and poor kitty ! My vet sells a natural calming herb for cats and dogs, unfortunately I cannot remember what it's called. Anyhow, I would def look into some kind of calming agent before your next vet trip Glad kitty seems to be doing better hugs
Now that she's recovering and we have some distance from the situation we're not sure if it was the cat or the vet. She's never liked going to the vet but nothing close to this has ever happened before. He was pretty upset that she scratched him but she was out of our sight so we can't prove anything.
I've been researching shock in cats and all I can find is to call the vet right away. I can't find anything about the vet causing it. Anyway now that she is out of danger we are pretty angry at the way the whole thing was handled. I'm also mad at the vet as well as myself for not stepping in and stopping the blood draw when he was having trouble. I never should have let him take her to the back out of my sight.
But she's doing better -- that's the important thing. I think she hurt her back when she was fighting him. She's just now jumping up on the bed and in the window again.
Oh, that is so sad Our Mitzy starts to yowl when she gets in the car because she definitely senses what she is about to encounter. Perhaps the next time your cat needs to go you can give her something to calm her down. You didn't say what her problem is. So, it could be an underlying problem. I had a beautiful gray cat some years ago that had surgery (neutering). When he came home he turned completely green! His skin, the whites of his eyes, his gums. That was a lengthy road to recovery. Cats are so very fragile as you know. I'm guessing your cat stays in the house just as my cats do, and only want you for cuddling. I wish your baby a speedy recovery. Lots of love and for your kitty.

Oh my! I am so sorry your kitty went through such a trying event. I am glad she is alright now. I have had several cats before and now have 4 and have never had any of them go through such a thing. I can just imagine how you felt with your baby in such a shape. I am glad she is recovering.
My Cats All Hate Going To The Vet, But I Think It Is More Stressful For Them To Be In The Car. My One Cat Sadie Gets Really Bad And Pants And Breathes Really Hard Like She Is Going To Have A Heart Attack. We Have A Vet Here Who Makes House Calls For Normal Check Ups. Why Dont You Check To See If One Is Available In Your Area. I Know My Neighbor Uses One That Comes To Her House.
