I have two friends who recently adopted older dogs one a Cairn terrier and the other an American eskimo. These rescue places charge a lot of money for these adoptions as much or more than those breeders. Both of these dogs were with foster families who provided for them so why do they charge so much?

Having dealt with adoption centers and foster care I can add that it takes a lot of money to run them and these people do not get any money from anywhere to help them. Volunteers do it out of the goodness of their hearts BUT the rescue organizations themselves don't get all that much money either. Many people believe that the state funds them and they dont. Every shelter is different. and they recieve donations and rely on donations. Since donations can not be relied upon all the time they must charge for each adoption. IT helps with the cost of vet care, shots, testing, wormings, food and even water in some places that have to pay for their water as well if they dont use a well (cold well water is free).

My sister volunteers for the spca in her area and they charge up to $150 for a puppy. When it comes to a pure breed dog that is nothing compared to the cost of pure one. Any well established breeder can charge up to $2000 for any dog. Even more for a well known blood line. It really depends on where you live and how well the breeder is known and that determines how much you pay when dealing with a breeder. IT also depends on if they have a litter available for your right then or you have to wait for one. Waiting lists are really just waiting for the female to have her puppies and then they test them to see if they will be good working/trainable dogs or good pets. Each dog is graded at about 7 weeks for this. None of them get destroyed over it , the testing is just to help determine if the dog is suitable as a family pet or a dog that needs to have a job and work for a living. Or is more dominant than the others.

Adoption centers have to also address these standards as well. and it cost money to have someone come in and assess these dogs as well to make sure they are trainable or able to be with humans/kids/other animals. If they arent then someone comdes in to train them or they are told that they must be in a single family house or one person animal with no other animals.

Just thought i'd give a little info on it.
