Default woodpeckers
Old 05-15-2007, 01:54 PM   #1 (permalink)

We just discovered a woodpecker nest in one of our trees at the back edge of our yard. Now, we've always had a couple around but never saw a nest. Does anyone know if they reuse their nests or if they make a new one every year? The reason I'm asking is that I discovered another one being built in the bush next to us yesterday when I was hanging laundry. The one at the back is being used so I think it's a different bird in the other one although I've only seen the one pair on a regular basis before.

Karen,

According to "Gardens Alive", woodpeckers do not reuse their nests. Here's a link to the full article:

Thanks Newbey!!

Sounds like the two nests are probably for the same pair, but I'll be sure to get DH to have a look around to make sure we're not leaving too many trees standing that are ideal for them. (I didn't think the trees they're nesting in were dying as they look good, but will have to take a closer look!)
