Default Leopard Gecko
Old 10-18-2006, 08:02 PM   #1 (permalink)

Our leopard gecko has just shed his skin. Are we supposed to get the left over skin off his fingers?

I used to have snakes... it's really cool watching reptiles and amphibs molt

As for the little bits of skin on the little guys fingers... I'd wait a couple of days to see if he'll clean them off himself. If they don't peel off on their own, then maybe you can give him a bath in some slightly warm water to soak the feet, then with some tweezers you can ever-so-gently pull the remnant skin off. He might try to bite tho... if the problem doesn't go away and he won't let you take the skin off for him, you should get him to the vet. What ever you do, don't use baby oil, it will mess with his own natural oils in his skin and may cause a reaction.

Thanks Knit Wit. We went ahead an gave him a warm bath and rubbed his fingers with a Q-tip and the extra skin came off. But his fingers look a little damaged. Hopefully they will be back to normal in a few days.

You say his fingers look damaged... what kind of home do you have for him? Do you have a glass aquarium with a mesh or screen top? If so, try to find a piece of plastic or plexiglass with airholes drilled for ventilation to use as a top. I've seen many snakes and iguanas hurt their noses trying to open the mesh screens, and it really makes them "not so pleasant' to be around because of the pain. Maybe your Gecko is using his hands to try to escape, and he's scraping his fingers on the screen top. Just a suggestion.
