Default What am I doing wrong?
Old 08-19-2003, 10:56 PM   #1 (permalink)

Okay I need some major help...

For as long as I've known, I've been a horrible painter.

My lines come out so rough and unclean, and when i try to paint, I get paint strokes from my brush.

What am I doing wrong? Is it the brushes I use? Is there some technique I need to know?

Or am I just doomed to be a terrible painter?

Jen,

Here are some things that might help. When you paint always dampen your brush, lay brush on paper towel to remove excess water, then dip into paint. When you paint use thin coats, a few thin coats are better than 1 thick one. Between coats rub with a brown paper bag, this is like using the finest sandpaper and will get rid of most lines and ridges. Also if your paint is too thick, usually happens with old paint, thin with a bit of extender, just 1 or 2 drops in the bottle then shake well.............. I hope this helps and just holler if you have any more questions or concerns..........

It's hard to say not knowing what kind of brushes you are using and which paint you use. The wrong type of brush or an old brush that is out of shape will certainly give you problems. If you are using acrylics make sure you are using brushes made for acrylics. A too stiff brush or not having enough paint in your brush will cause streaking (brush strokes).

If your lines are coming out rough and unclean that tells me that either there is not enough moisture/paint in your brush or you need to purchase some new brushes.

I don't think anyone is doomed to be a terrible painter. :-) But any kind of painting begins with good tools and good paint. Your work is only as good as the tools you use.

Here are a few sites with tutorials and tips that might help:

If you can, try to take a class at a local craft store. You will learn all of the basics and have a better understanding of what you might be doing wrong.

Good luck and don't give up! Painting can be a very relaxing and fulfilling hobby.
