Default help...what type of paint 2 use on a mailbox
Old 04-21-2003, 10:54 AM   #1 (permalink)

Good morning! I bought a metal white mailbox, and some chunky foam rubberstamps. What would be the best paint to use for this project? I tried acrylic, but it comes out funny, sort of too wet & squishy looking. Now, I could be using too muc paint. Or should I be using something like rustoleum (?spelling on that:-)? It will be exposed to the elements.

Thanks in advance for all the great advice!

Did you wipe the mailbox with rubbing alcohol first......... that removes the oils then you can use a primer.... flat........ then paint with regular acrylics. You will need to use laquer as a finish if it will be out in the elements.........

Patio Paint is not made for metal surfaces. It's for concrete, masonary, terra cotta and wood.

For your mailbox you can use regular acrylics and then seal it, or you can save yourself even more steps and time and use DecoArt's No-Prep Metal Paint. This is made specifically for metal surfaces and needs no finish. Just clean the surface, paint, and your done. In 5 days the paint is completely cured and can be exposed to the elements.

I use this paint for metal outdoor picnic table lanterns and it's great stuff. Holds up really well.
