Default Tatting patterns
Old 07-28-2008, 01:07 PM   #2 (permalink)

GM Ladies. I have recently taught myself how to crotat. What I am wondering is if anyone would know of a site that could teach me how to read a tatting pattern, with instructions on the stitches. As of yet all I can do is to make rings and join them. I would like to be able to incorporate tatting into a crocheted doily.

TIA rascal (Barb)

Rascal- a good site to go on is BellaOnline -- The Voice of Women. She has lots of information on tatting and I have found her site helpful. I am always looking for tatting patterns. Reading tatting can be confusing at first but it really isn't that hard as it looks. Take this from me, who has only been tatting for a couple of months now. For instance a ring of 2-2-2-2 cl r would mean to do "2 double stitches, a picot, 2 ds, picot, 2 ds, picot, 2 ds and then you would close the ring. Chains can be a little confusing because you need to work off a ball as well as use your shuttle which I, myself, am slowly getting. Some patterns, like crochet, have their own abbreviations that usually are defined. I have started a very simple place mat which I am making into a doily but it has taken me a while to even be able to get to this point. The more you practice the better you get, I have found.

Don't give up if you're not quite getting it. Youtube has some videos that also may help for those of you who need to visually see what goes on when making your knots.

I missed the cro-tatting age which actually was made popular by "Annies Attic" a while ago. I will probably incorporate crochet into my tatting eventually.

Hi
I hope I am posting this message to the correct place.
I too have tried tatting but find the instructions awkward when I try them for "real". I also find that the thread does not come off the bobbin easily-it's as though it's too tight so I'm wondering what the best thread for a beginner would be?

Thanks,
Cheryl L.

I've had the same problem as you when I first started, but have found that you need to wind not so tightly and also be careful to not twist the thread as you're turning which was originally my problem. When you do it enough, you'll master it. I've been using #10 crochet thread because I'm still very much a novice. Here's a page that you may find useful:http://www.ca.uky.edu/hes/fcs/FACTSHTS/CT-MMB-750.pdf
