Default good food expensive
Old 07-03-2009, 07:53 AM   #1 (permalink)

I would like to know why is it that the good food we are supposed to eat when trying to loose weight is so expensive, when the junk I like to eat is so cheap , I don't think this is fair.

For some reason they think we are dumb and don't read labels. But diet foods are bland. If you watch your carbs you can lose weight that way. Drinking lots of water can also help. I drink a mouth full of water after every bite of food I take. That helps fill the belly so you don't eat as much. May work or not for some people.
Don't make diet food companies rich is my motto.

Making simple meals from scratch is a lot cheaper than purchasing ready made. You know the ingredients you put in and can adjust them as needed. I never buy 'diet' food. A minimum of fruits, lots of veggies, and lots of water will help make a thinner you.

I once saw a news story about this very question and they made an interesting point. Chips, peanuts and candy are actually quite expensive. Consider how much they would cost if sold by the pound and how much you need to eat to get the same amount of fullness. They had some sort of numbers like you would need to eat like 3 large bags of chips to get the same level of fullness as the healthy stuff they were touting we should eat instead.

I was making snide remarks when the story was being aired but I have never looked at a bag of chips, box of cookies or candy the same way again.

Assuming you are in the US or in similar seasonal/climate, look for farmer's markets and roadside stands. This time of year should bring some lower prices on fruits and vegetables. The prices in the grocery stores don't seem to fluctuate much anymore but some of the markets and stands have great deals when something is in "season".

Drives me nuts when I see some rich and famous smarty-pants talk about their weight-loss diets. They spend more on one meal than most people do all day and seem to think everyone can eat like they do. And I won't even talk about those dieters with their own private chefs to make the low-fat, low-cal, low-salt, low everything actually taste like something worth eating. Oh yes, my personal chef, he'll be hired as soon as I win the lottery.

Default Expensive to get healthy foods
Old 09-18-2009, 04:14 PM   #6 (permalink)

I am a diabetic, so food prep and food purchasing is a high priority in my life. I am also trying to lose that last 50 lbs of a 100 lb journey.

I have found in South Dakota, at least NE South Dakota, fresh produce is not plentiful nor cheap. I paid $2.79 for four tomatoes this last week....farmer's market price was over $3.00 per pound.
Our farmer's market has gone nuts with their prices, they know we want their fresh things, so they are taking advantage of the market. It's a lot of work, I am sure, I don't/can't garden....so I am willing to pay a little more but four tomatoes for $6.00, can't do it.

Yes, chips and snacks are spendy, but they fill the whole. I am doing a low carb diet, and as much as I hate it, with diabetes it fits the need. I hate the idea of not having as much fruit as I like, but that's life.

I don't know if it means we don't buy the stuff, or we learn to live with it. This summer, I had to admit that prices were never going to be as low as I was used to and I would have to get used to it....guess I did.
