Default My favorite craft
Old 11-28-2004, 03:47 PM   #1 (permalink)

I took up tin can sculpturing back in the '70s--I saw some old pieces at a craft fair on exhibit--my brain clicked away and told me that I could do that--I went home, made my own tools and after a few very serious cuts to my hands, I invested in a good pair of leather gloves! I sat and created my own designs from the supplies that I had. The pieces that I am showing you here are all I have left from the years of doing this. All my work has been sold as fast as I could make it or given as gifts. I still dabble in it, but not as much as before, my hands are not what they once where! I hope you enjoy looking at the pics and get some ideas of what it is all about.

These chairs and lounge were some of the first that I made. They were made from soup cans and a spam can. The cushions are made from velvet stuffed with cotton batting. The one on the left is spray painted an off-white with a red cushion, the one in the middle is painted green with a cream cushion, and the one on the right is painted red with a black cushion.

This is the last piece I have of the Barbie Doll furniture that I was making. I sold so many pieces I had back orders for that! I had to beg, plea and bargain with everyone to get cans big enough to make this line of furniture.

This is a vanity set. The vanity was a large Hi-C juice can--the mirror was from a vintage compact--the stool was a can of corn. the top of the vanity is decopaged lace that matches the lace in the cushion of the stool.

This is my pride and joy! I could never sell or part with it! It took so long to finish it--I was constantly making changes to suit my fancy!

The bed has a canopy trimmed with lace--I gathered and sewed it all on by hand. The bed has a small mattress that I made with cotton batting--and I made the satin sheets to go on it also--along with the pillows and cases. The bed was cut from an old paint thinner can.

The vanity was made from a large spam can with a vintage compact mirror that was still contained in the lid--this was the first time I ever used soldering to hold my pieces together--but in this case it was the only way I could get the two to hold up. The top of vanity is a piece of thin foam covered with satin.

The stool was a spice can--the cushion was satin with cotton batting underneath. All metal pieces were sprayed painted a light gold to go with the taupe satin.
