Ingredients
4 1/2 cups Flour
1 cup Shortening/lard
1 1/4 cups Ice water
1 tsp Salt
5 1/2 cups Potatoes, diced
2 Med carrots, silced
1 Med onion, diced
1/2 cup Rutabaga, diced (optional)
1 1/2 pounds Ground beef
2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Ground black pepper
1/2 cup Beef broth
Preparation
1. Combine flour and salt in a large bow. Cut shortening into the flour. Make a well in the center of mixture, and quickly stir in ice cold water. Form dough into a ball. Set aside.
2. Dissolve beef base in hot water.
3. In a large bowl combine the uncooked vegetables, uncooked meat, salt, pepper and beef broth. Mix well
4. Roll out pastry dough into a circle, use a dinner plate as a guide. Cut off excess and use for the next circle. Repeat until you have used all the dough.
5. Place about 1 to 1 1/2 cups of filling on half of the dough circle. Brush the edges with water, then fold over and seal together. Cut a slit in the top of each pasty.
6. Place on baking sheets. Bake at 425 for about 45 minutes, or until golden brown
