Default Are knitting stitch names and techniques consistent?

Are knitting stitch names and techniques consistent?

For example, with crochet if you asked someone who crocheted 100 years ago, someone from England and someone from the United States how to make a double crochet; you might get three very different answers.

If I took that same group of people and asked them about knitting stitches, would they provide up to three different answers or would they all say the same thing?

I'm asking because I've found some vintage knitting patterns from England and am wondering if what they are calling something may not be what a modern-day knitter might call that stitch.

For the most part, yes.. knitting stitches are pretty much consistant. There are some exceptions of course, as like you said, different locations/passage of time. For instance, in a vintage knitting pattern, the term "yarn over needle" or "yon" may today be commonly known simply as "Yarn over" or "yo". That would be the most common difference in patterns from yesteryear to today. If you need help deciphering vintage patterns, let me know what terms you need help with, and I"ll try to translate it into common terms of today.

Thank you for your reply.

I have a free patterns and craft projects site that I've been relaunching - http://www.thecraftytipster.com. It has always included original and vintage crochet patterns and I thought I would add some vintage knitting patterns that I've found. As a crocheter, I see the inconsistencies and have tried to add stitch information with each pattern. I've even posted a page of vintage English stitch definitions - Instructions for Vintage English Crochet Stitches | The Crafty Tipster

As a non-knitter, I don't know if it would be helpful or not to include the original designer's stitch definitions or create a similar historical stitch definitions page for knitters.

From what you've said, it sounds like it would be less likely with the old knitting patterns for there to be the same confusion as there is with the crochet patterns.

I've posted 4 vintage knitting patterns so far. If you have a few minutes, I would truly appreciate if you took a quick peek at them and see if they match what modern knitters call things.

Thanks.
