| As I am a student, and thus perpetually broke, I have created my own Knifty Knitter...kinda.
I got a flat, wooden circle (made from a piece of plywood from my garage) and some wooden peg-like pieces (these I bought at the hardware store; they were made to be coat hangers), drilled my holes equally spaced around the ring, and screwed the pegs to the board. I sanded my pieces before putting it together as so that there would be minimal snagging. I also painted and spray-enameled it once it was together to make allow the yarn to slide along the pegs easily.
And, yet another knifty knitter like creation I have is a 2x4 that is about 14" long (it was scrap I found in my garage) and has 1/2" holes drilled every 1 inch along the board, 1 inch deep. I also have 12 2" pegs made from a 1/2" wide dowel and 1" wide buttons. I can arrange the pegs as I see fit, making may different guages (and widths) available to me.
My total cost for both items was about $10. The dowel cost $1 whereas the wooden pegs cost about $3 for 20 of them (I made a 20-peg, 16-peg, a 12-peg, and an 8-peg round all out of the same piece of plywood).
I'm in no way against use of the knifty knitter; it's just a way to spend about less than the knifty knitter kit was at the time I made these, and make it more custom to my needs. |
