Default Teaching jewelry in 2008
Old 10-12-2007, 01:37 AM   #1 (permalink)

I'm thinking about teaching basic jewelry making in my community. It's still in the planning stage but I have never done this before. Has anyone here done this, if so how did it go for you.

Lots of people have seen my work and want to learn the basics so they can make jewelry too.

Any suggestions on starting would be a great help.

TIA,

milli

Hi Milli,
Do you have a community billboard you can advertise on. I started this way and now have a very
large collection of ladies that come to my house. I started with a few basics like teaching them how to make earrings for the first 2 weeks, then went to bracelets, then necklaces. By this time they will have got the hang of a few basics then you can go further with them.

The internet is a fabulous place for find stuff for beginners. Welcome to About.com is a site that gives free
beading lessons straight to your computer every day.

If you go to GOOGLE and type in Bobs Beading it will give a beginners site which is also extremely good.

I make up kits for them in zipped plastic lunch bags and include instructions so they can follow them.

Hope this is some use to you. All the best.. Rosanna

Hi...
I would check your local craft stores. Most Michael's have classes. I used to teach at several in my area. In general the classes went well. Didn't earn a lot of money, but make some new friends.

Also, adult night schools often have classes.

Good luck!

Wink Teaching Jewelry Making

Rosanna,

I want to conduct the classes from my home as well. Some people have asked but, I didn't think I had enough interest to start the classes. Putting something on the community board is a great idea. I will also take a look at the sites you mentioned.

I was thinking of starting simple and work up to more advanced stuff as the men/women
progress. Also I wanted to make my fee somewhat competitive to thoes at the collages. I took a look at what they offer and it's not very good. They teach you how to make one thing and charge more for additional items to make but, what a student wants from a class like this is to walk away with more then one completed items made from several weeks of going to class.

I'm looking forward to start teaching people how to do what I do.

Thank you very much for the info.

Milli
