Default E-bay Cautions!!!
Old 02-28-2004, 12:17 PM   #1 (permalink)

Slide gave me permission to do this so I'm posting some things you need to be on the lookout for regarding E-bay.

First off, don't let it discourage your from buying or selling on E-bay...as with anything you need to be prepared.

1. DO NOT CLICK ON ANY E-MAILS YOU GET FROM
Quote:
E-BAY
STATING THAT IF YOU DON'T SIGN IN YOUR ACCOUNT WITH BE SUSPENDED
. This is a way for people to get your account name and password. E-bay will not ask you for your password. If you get one of these e-mails forward the e-mail (do not send it as an attachment) to the following addy: spoof@ebay.com. Also, E-bay suggests changing your password occasionally to protect yourself.

2. If you have perfect feedback be on the watch for hi-jacked accounts. That's the one reason my account was hi-jacked when I was away on my honeymoon. To be able to sell on E-bay motors you need perfect feedback, I have that. I'd say if you're going away...please have someone you trust check your account and make sure no one has hi-jacked it and tried to sell something under your account. The way you know you've been hi-jacked is if you cannot log into your account. If that happens...you need to go to E-bay help and do a live chat. The people there have a way of knowing that your account was hi-jacked and can reset your password and stop the auctions for you.

3. If you're buying on e-bay always check the persons feedback....are they a good seller? Are they a slow responder? Are they good at communicating with buyers? If you feel unsure, then don't bid. I'd rather have to look further for the item then deal with someone who is not honest.

4. Forms of payment cautions....DO NOT SEND WIRE TRANSFERS!! This is one way bad sellers get their money fast without being tracked. The person that hi-jacked my account and tried to sell a Corvette under it had people wire money to Italy!!!! Try not to send cash....no matter how small the total is money orders are under a $1 now a days so go get one!!! I had a friend get banned because a seller hadn't received his payment. He had a major problem getting a hold of the person because he did not keep any e-mails from the seller.

5. Keep all communication e-mails until the auction has been completed....and item has been received. If you're selling, keep all info for about a month. And as common curtasy, let the customer know when the payment was received and when item will ship. I have had sellers not do that and I don't do business with them any longer. They claim they don't have the time to handle every auction that way, so I figure if you're that darn busy you don't need my business!

If I come up with anymore cautions, I'll post them here. Also, if there's anything I've forgotten just add it

Have fun either buying or selling....but just use caution and common sense!!!!

Another word of caution that was on the evening news last night. Someone was selling on line, and received a cashiers check from outside the country for a higher amount, with a request for the seller to send back the change. This person took the "check" to the police who discoved that it was a fake. It looked real, but the account numbers were falsified.

Always let a check clear before sending merchandise. It takes at least 5 business days.

I got a very authentic looking Ebay mail asking me to "click here" to update my credit card and that my account is pre-indefinitely suspended.

I didn't click on anything or give out any info.

Anyone else get this?

Robin

At least once a week!!! Sad but it's a scam. If they ever say you've been suspended or will be suspended...never EVER click on their link and sign in, go into e-bay from your favorites. But if you want to be sure...forward the e-mail to that spoof e-mail addy that's posted here.

I got an email from Paypal saying they suspect a third party was trying to access my paypal account. I usually get paid from my ebay auctions with paypal, so don't know if that's how it got started or someone just trying to hack into it. Now I check my paypal account daily to make sure the balance is correct. Didn't know if anyone else got an email like that.

Thanks,

Lori

It's a shame we have to worry about stuff like this. Right now I'm only selling on Ebay so when I build up so much in my Paypal account, I transfer it over to my bank account.

Like they say....change your password often. I have SO many things that require passwords it's enough to drive me mad to keep changing them. lol

I did get a reply from Ebay and it was indeed Spoof. Some people out there aren't aware of these scams and they click on those links.

I hope someday there can be a way to fully put a stop to this, but there's always someone smarter out there.

Just like the IRS scam I posted in computer help.....they will always think of someway to scam people. What it boils down to...........if someone is asking for any personal info in any e-mail, it's more than likely a scam!!!
