ISO Lightbulb Patterns

I am seeking some patterns/info on using those new type lightbulbs. I think they are fluorescent bulbs. They are the spiral type ones. Would like to know how I can use these for crafts. Can they be painted someway like the regular type bulb?

I have the fat ones and the only thing I can come up with is a skeleton for halloween, just add eyes and mouth. And maybe Xmas Ornaments, painted then add glitter.
