Default Calling all crafters and DIY'ers/help w birdhouse project.......
Old 02-10-2009, 11:41 AM   #1 (permalink)

I am attempting to make a craft project.......
I am making some bird houses. I am using natural items, some art objects and using recycled objects for the basic house.
I am decorating them with rocks, shells, sands, mosses, twigs, silks flowers, wooden accents, fabricks, buttons ....ect.....

Here is the question.....

I want to use caulk and silicone to adhere the deco objects......the tube says the caulk will adhere to painted and unpainted wood, and brick, plaster/drywall, masonery......but it DOESN'T say plastic....or metals.........

I am using some of the sq 2.5 gallon water jugs and some of the large juice cans.....
Will my deco's stay stuck in the wind, rain and hot temps?????
I have a couple rocks stuck on a milk jug at the moment to see if they will stick....but it will take awhile to dry....just wondering if anyone can give me advice while I wait.............
I know if I use hot glue then things MIGHT come unglued in the hot weather..........
Some of them will be for deco only...not suitable for actual bird use....like for a porch or sitting in the house.....but some will actually be usable for real birdies.............
I am selling them so I want to make sure they are worthy.........ya know ???? Planning to attend some craft shows this year to help in the income department a lil bit............I do have plans for some just plain wood ones but I wanted some of them deco'ed out.....
ANY IDEAS AND COMMENTS WELCOME....PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I usually use E6000 glue on things that will be exposed to water for long periods, but I am not sure how well it will stick to milk jugs. You could give it a try & see though. I found a tube of glue called 'Duco Cement' at the local dollar general store, and it will stick anything to anything, but i dont know how well it will hold up in water.

Let us know if you try either one & what the results were. Also let us know how the silicone/caulk work.

Good luck with your birdhouses, would love to see pictures when you are done with them.

My farmer husband uses a clear silicone to patch holes in water tanks and different things. He even used it to hold his taillight in place after it got knocked out of his pickup. It lasts forever and withstands the weather really well. What he uses comes in a tube like caulk. Hope this helps!

Hi Kay, I used Silicone II for attaching the marbles to my bowling balls and it has worked great. They are out all summer in the sun and rain with no problems. I do bring them in for the winter. I would think this would work for you.
