Buy the curly doll hair--take a very, very small amount (about one or two curls)--put it in the palm of your hand and roll it around--you may have to use your fingers to roll it--it will fluff up to twice the size you had. If you would rather have a hair style that lays on the head--then do the same--cut a curl or two and lay it on the head without the rolling.
If you bought the long strands of doll hair, your best bet is to dip it in liquid starch or watered down white glue then wrap it around something small like toothpicks and let it dry.
HOW TO STUFF DOLLS & TOYS:
Stuffing can make or break a doll or soft toy. Many a time, I've seen a beautiful dolly that has been spoiled because of the way it was stuffed. So here are some basic tips to achieve a good result.
Always select the highest-quality fiber fill available. Each brand is quite different, and a more expensive fiber fill will often go further and cost less in the long run.
Prepare the area to be filled by removing loose threads and trimming excess fabric from seams and corners. Clip inward curves, and notch outward curves.
Have stuffing aids ready. Try using a wooden spoon, the eraser end of an unsharpened pencil, a T-pin or a commercial stuffing tool. Invest in a pair or 2 of hemostats, they come in several sizes, i use 2, you can pinch the fiber and work it into the smallest of places, like fingers and toes. A knitting needles is also a good tool for stuffing as a small dowell.
When stuffing, select the amounts of fiber fill in relation to the area to be stuffed. Use small amounts for arms and fingers, larger amounts for heads and bodies.
Keep fiber fill fluffy. Do not compress it into a ball. Many fluffy layers will yield a smooth result.
Work the fiber fill into the project with your fingers, then push it firmly into position with a stuffing aid. Smooth each added amount of fiber fill by gently compressing it with your hands from the outside. In larger areas carefully move the fiber fill into place by massaging the outside of the project.
To manipulate the fiber fill tightly into corners, insert a straight pin or a T-pin through the project, and work the fiber fill into position.
For projects that require flexibility, follow the steps above without packing the fiber fill too firmly in order to keep it fluffy.
When stitching the opening closed, work the fiber fill loosely to the edge and begin stitching the seam. Shift the fiber fill under the stitched seam to create a smooth finish.
To add weight to arms, legs and bottom for a posed appearance, use a weighted stuffing material such as pellets. Avoid rice or birdseed, which attract insects and promotes mold growth.
To turn fabric arms and legs right side out, place a piece of PVC pipe inside the limb. Push the eraser end of a pencil against the fabric from the outside of the limb into the center of the PVC pipe, and the fabric will push through the pipe on the inside.
For the fingers, before turning use a small amount of frey check on the seams and turn while still damp, you can insert a hemostat, pinch the tip and pull inside out. If they are too small, you can take a needle and thread with a large knot and insert into the tip of the finger and run needle out the hand/arm and it will pull the tip rightside out, snip the thread the knot can stay inside as it will not be noticed.
Once the arm is turned right side out, using the hemostats to hold fibre push it into the arm/legyou can get it dwon where you want it in tight places better. Or use PVC pipe to get stuffing into it. Put the PVC pipe inside the arm, place a small amount of stuffing inside the pipe, and push it through with the eraser end of a pencil. Pull the pipe out.
When stuffing small doll fingers, Be careful not to use too much pressure to prevent blowouts. Place polyester fiber fill on the end of a piece of wire, and turn the wire several times, wrapping the filling around it. Push the fiber fill end of the wire into the doll finger. From the outside of the finger, pinch the fabric at the base of the finger, and slide the wire out. The fiber fill will be left in place. Or using the smaller size hemostat pinch the fiber and insert it into the finger and using a small dental pick you can push it into the tip of the finger.
