Old 03-22-2003, 02:51 PM   #1 (permalink)

Hi all, I am new to this forum, and you all seemed so nice & helpful I thought I would try to get HELP . I want to make cloth dolls with a molded cloth face. you can some examples of this at http://www.sistersanddaughters.com/molding.html

I have a doll head I purchased in green ware. I am trying to find out what is used to mix with the cloth or felt to mold it. Perhaps glue??? ANY help would be appreciated. I've been searching for days. Maybe I'll just have to purchase a kit & find out

Hi,

I have "the Complete Book of Dollmaking", by Pamela Peake-(worth every penny!), and she gives instructions for making faces in wool felt.

If wool felt is not to be found, says to back it with iron-on interfacing.

Clean your form, cover with "Vaseline"or liquid detergent, mold soap-,cover with buckram soaked in hot water, work into all the features of the mold, let dry, cover with glue, cover with felt, stockinette, thin cotton- fabric of choice.

Further strengthen mask by adding more layers of fabric, or papier mache. Hope this helps- recommend the book!

Hi again-

Sorry I was so vague- Buckram is a kind of stiffening cloth- you can see it inside hats, some waistbands-big weave, not pretty- cheeseclothy- fabric store should have..

And by mold I meant- whatever you are making the faces like- maybe a doll face you like-(no sleep eyes!) maybe a face you made yourself-or one of those plastic ones that are made to be sewn onto stuufed dolls. Be sure not to press too hard on the glued material that you will be using for the face- you don't want to force the glue through the final material..

I am not sure what would be a violation of copyright, so am trying not to repeat exactly.

Hope you can find the book! All questions like this answered!
