I was just given some pillows (from the craft store) with no covers. I am interested in making some throw covers for them and embroidering some pictures to match my bedroom on them. However I went to Michael's and was immediately overwhemled. I did not realize there was so much involved. I could not find an beginners book to assist me. How do I begin? HELP

Hi and welcome aboard! Sorry it took so long for me to reply; I hope the info I found will help make up for the delay.

You've probably already discovered that there are not only different stitches to use in embroidery, but different mediums as well such as ribbons, yarn, metallic threads, embroidery floss and more.

Without knowing the type of embroidery subjects you need to match your decorating schemes, I would first suggest that you choose a pattern that doesn't require a lot of different colors or and/or a large variety of stitches. Most patterns will indicate whether they are designed for beginners, but you can generally look at the picture of the finished work and tell how intricate it is.

Here are some sites that will hopefully be of help:

Ribbon embroidery (great for accenting, but you should probably wait until you have a project or two "under your belt":

The running stitch is the most common and easiest stitch to do, as it is basically just a succession of straight stitches. Here is a site that shows you how to do a variety of embroidery stitches:

If you need more information or if you are looking for a particular pattern or subject, post it here and we'll see what we can find for you!
