Cross stitch software

Can anyone out there help me find a free program to create my own cross stitch patterns. Or, if you could just get me started as to how I could do this on my own, without a program. I am new to this, although I have been doing cross stitch for many years. I am tired of the same old things you find in the stores. I need a way to create my own, but do not have lots of money to spend at the moment. PLEASE HELP.

Long before there was graphing kits and computer kits--I made cross-stitch patterns by placing onion-skin paper over a picture &amp; traced the picture--then I made my chart &amp; graph paper by using a ruler &amp; pencil--I would place the graph paper on top of the onion-skin--tape it down--hold it up to a lampshade &amp; draw onto the graph paper--when I finished that, I would go to the kitchen table &amp; rearrange the picture I had just traced-- to fix within the little squares. Most of my pictures were from my children´s coloring books, but the cross-stitch turned out fine--I gave them as gifts--&amp; everyone was pleased. I´m not knocking the technology that we have today--all I´m saying is that nothing will ever take the place of the imagination of a determined person!

Some of these software programs are shareware and most are very reasonable in price. It can't hurt to try them!
