Default Winter hood for a coat or jacket
Old 08-04-2008, 11:00 PM   #1 (permalink)

Materials:
1-2 balls of worsted weight yarn in your choice of colours. (I used Bernat Super Value yarn in Cream and a green to match my jacket.)
Size G (6 US) or size to obtain gauge
5 x ½ inch buttons
Gauge: 8 sts and 6 rows = 2 in.
Stitches used: sc, and alternating sc and dc. SEE PHOTO.

Notes: Measure inside of collar on coat/jacket. This will guide you as to how many stitches needed for base row. My hood is 20 inches, so these instructions are for that measurement.
Abbreviations: cont = continue, ea = each, dec = decrease, inc = increase, sc = single chain. dc = double chain, sts = stitches, ch = chain,

Starting at base of hood, with main colour, ch 77
Row 1: (right side) sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next ch, * 1 sc in next sc, 1 dc in the next dc* repeat from * to end. (76 sts) Turn
Rows 2-6: Dec 1 st at ea end of next 5 rows (66sts) remain at end of last row.
Rows 7 on: Work this pattern evenly on 66 sts until you have a piece measuring 13 inches (32.5 cm).

Finishing:
sc all round edge of piece. Fold top row of hood in half. Starting at fold, sew top seam of hood together. Fasten off.
Attach contrast colour, and sc along front edge of hood, ch 1 at end, turn, sc back to beginning, ch 1 and turn. *Dc in next ch and cont to end. .* repeat from * for 4 rows, dec over 2 sc at each end. Fasten off.

Button rows:
Turn piece over and dc in ea of sc of row 1. (This will give you more “holes” to ensure you can sew your buttons evenly spaced or if you goof sewing them on like I did!) ch 1 and turn. * 1 sc in next sc, 1 dc in the next dc* repeat from * to end. Turn, inc at ea end of work for 5 rows. Sc all round edge. Fasten off. Sew buttons to INSIDE of collar on jacket evenly spaced as best as you can. Attach hood with the buttons.

Your hat looks neat. I work in a cooler for 8 hrs and need hats to prevent severe headaches I might have to try this.

Thanks!
It's really warm and you can make it fit any size coat or jacket. You could even add it to a sweater to make it a hoody!
