THE SHIPS PROJECT

THE SHIPS PROJECT began in October, 2001, when a female soldier aboard the USS BATAAN, responding to an "any sailor" letter asked me (Ellen Harpin), an avid knitter, if I'd make her a pair of slippers. Soon, other sailors sharing her berthing (sleeping area) were asking for them. The task of making 60 of anything was daunting, so I asked online friends if they would help. From those efforts, word spread to other ships, and we changed our name from The BATAAN Project to The Ships Project to reflect our growing involvement with other US Navy Ships.
