Post If it's dusty in your house...imagine the inside of your PC!!!
Old 08-24-2007, 10:06 AM   #1 (permalink)

I decided to post this little bit, because Al and I just got done fixing a co-workers PC.
He's had the PC for 3 years and believe me, it's never been cleaned out.
I know some are afraid of open up the side of the PC and look inside, but trust me, just follow these few simple rules and you can do it. And your PC won't overheat and breakdown or worse, totally fry to the point of it's cheaper to buy a new PC!!!!
1) One side of the PC is easy to open. It's usually the left side when looking straight at the PC. Lay the PC on it's side and remove the panel.
2) Get a can of air!!! If it's never been done...you might need 2!!!
3) Start blowing out the insides!!!! Careful not to touch anything until you've de-staticed yourself (I know it's not a word, but deal with it! ) To do this, just touch something metal first to get rid of any built up electricity in your body. I recommend doing this outside on a DRY day!!!! If not all that dust is just going back in your house and your PC!
4) Pay close attention to the CPU...it's a fan sitting on the motherboard, which if you've got the PC laying down will be on the bottom! Also, make sure to get it out of the cooling fans!
5) The canned air will start spewing out some cold foamy stuff....put the can down for awhile cause it's probably so cold at this point you can't handle it! If you've got 2 cans, use the other one! Try not to let any of the liquid stuff get on there, but don't worry if it does, it won't hurt it as long as you don't keeping letting it spray out. Some of the foamy stuff has gotten on our PC's and they're still working!
6) Most of all...don't be afraid to do this...it's easy and won't hurt a thing if you're careful...and if you're really afraid to do it, take it to a tech or a friends who has done it before and have them do it for you!!!
NOW GO CLEAN THOSE PC'S THEY'RE FILTHY!!!!!

I use old makeup brushes to dust mine out. I don't want to even think about my son getting his hands on that spray stuff, "huffing" is and has been a big problem, especially in my area of the country. Kids and teens think it's a harmless high, since you can buy the stuff at WalMart.

If you use those cans of "air", please keep this in mind.

Oh boy, I just saw this and that's what my tech friend did yesterday to my old PC, took it outside to clean with the air can.

He is going to get a new electric power supply for it soon.

I have a question for this new Lap Top, what to use to clean off the screen as its attracting little spec's of ???.

Jean....my laptops said to only use a damp cloth...no chemicals like Windex. I just take a papertowel and wet it, then ring it out and wipe gently. Be careful not to push the screen. Also for quick dusting of it, I use those Swiffer cloths...just gently wipe the screen and it removes the dust.

Tammy, is it not a good idea to vacuum the dust out? Or does the air thing get areas that a vacuum can't reach?
