Default mason jar oil candles
Old 10-22-2002, 08:09 PM   #1 (permalink)

Hi, looking for instructions for mason jar oil candles. You use liquid parafin lamp oil and a mason jar filled with potpourri or dried flowers. There is a special wick you use with a glass tube. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Beth

I have a mason jar lamp. My jar is filled with scented lamp oil(much safer) It has a regular lamp wick that extends through a hole punched in the the round disc that goes on the canning jar. The ring is then screwed on. You can put in potpourri, cinnamon sticks etc. When I purchased it, there was a second disc over the first one to prevent leaking and then the ring was screwed on. Remember anything with parafin is highly flammable.

Annie,

I was concerned about making the oil lamps without instructions because of being flamable. What you explained seems to be what I saw at the craft show. Do you use a regular oil lamp wick and how do you attach it to the disk that is on the outside of the lid? I am still not sure enough to give this a try. Thanks for your help

Elizabeth,

I am from PA also. Near Allentown

It is just a regular fiber type wick. They are sold for oil lamps. Drill or poke a hole through the disc. (not too big) Pull the wick through the hole leaving only about a half inch on top. The rest goes into the jar and if possible touches the bottom of the jar. You can buy scented lamp oil at Walmart. Also you want the hole that the wick comes through to be fairly tight so the wick is held tightly in place. Place the flat disc with the wick coming through on the jar and screw on the ring and that's all there is to it.

I had copied these instructions down, and forgot which site I got them from.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Fill bottle or jar nearly full with lamp oil.

2) Adjust wick in glass tube so that it is approximately 1/8" above top. Depending upon bottle opening, add adaptor ring if necessary. Place in bottle.

3) Allow 5-10 minutes time before lighting to allow wick to fully absorb fuel to the top.

Cool Decorating Ideas:

Decorative glass bottles can be found in all shapes and colors! You can fill jars with cute imaginative items such as Chile Peppers, Dried Herbs & Flowers, Beads, Buttons, Marbles, Seashells etc! Check out our Gel page for a variety of Seashells & Frosted Sea Glass!

CAUTIONS:

Use only liquid paraffin oil that is meant for oil lamps & candles. Never use any other fuel type! Keep oil candles on a stable surface and out of the reach of children & pets. They can be easily spilled if tipped over since bottle top is not sealed!

HTH

Vicki
