WOODEN BEADS:
joanie: has one of those car seat things made of wooden barrel shape beads about 1" long. She needs some ideas to use them after she cuts them apart.
mawmaw: * make a doll with--find a wooden head that is the right proportions to the wooden beads--take two beads for each arm and leg--a round bead for the hands, feet, elbows, and knees--one round bead for the neck--make the body from a glass or plastic jar or old sock stuffed with batting, or a small box or a small block of finished wood--use doll hair or yarn on the head--paint on facial features--glue the head and arms and legs to the body you have chosen--then decorate it as a boy or girl.
*Paint the beads different colors--before paint dries--sprinkle ultra fine glitter on it--let dry--then spray with acrylic sealer--add crystal beads in between the wooden beads to make a necklace.
*Paint the beads green--add ultra fine glitter (as above) and spray sealer--add red crystal beads in between the wooden beads to make a garland to go around the Christmas Tree or to decorate the mantle or doorway.
*Paint the beads to match the colors in a room (like a bathroom, kitchen or utitity room)--string the beads onto ribbon, jute, fishing line or any cording--add embellishments that you have that will match the room you have chosen (such as other colored beads, charms, buttons, etc.)--you are making a beaded curtain for the window (s) in the room you chose--much like the ones that hung in the doorways in the late 60-70s.

BUTTON JEWELRY:
Handmade jewelry has never been so easy when you combine buttons and perhaps old earrings, charms or even beads to make brooches and pins. This is a perfect gift for a young girl or a woman of any age!
The Base: from thin craft wood, cut a heart shape 3-4 inches across. Sand the edges smooth. Round will work well too.
The bottom layer: Glue on a layer of simple shirt buttons of all one color.
The top layer: Affix your special buttons with glue; keeping the heart shape intact. If you want to add earring or charm pieces work those in where you feel they look good.
To finish: On the back glue a piece of brocade or tapestry fabric and cover the edges of the wood base by gluing on ribbon or narrow cord. Add a pin back as the final step.

USING OLD COSTUME JEWELRY:
larae1of6: would like to make some crafts for her church bazaar, using costume jewelry--anyone have any new suggestions on what we could make?
joanie: advices to be sure that all the jewelry is junk--some jewelry from long ago sells for more "as is".
mawmaw: purchase: pkgs of different colors of Moira silk, long pin backs and black felt.
donations: cotton balls or batting, embroidery floss and stiff cardboard or poster board.
directions: take jewelry apart--cut ovals from cardboard and felt about 2 1/2 x 1 1/2"--cut silk about 1/2 to 5/8" larger than oval--make a basting stitch all around edge of silk--put cotton on cardboard--drape silk on top--pull basting stitch until it is taut around cardboard--run bead of glue to hold in place--take black felt and glue onto the back to hide stitching--then take jewelry pieces and glue and/or stitch to the front--add small pieces of lace and a few fancy embroidery stitches--let your imagination run wild--when finished, glue pin back on and stand back and admire your work of art.
lynda from B.C.: uses junk jewelry all the time--she gets candy cans 2 or 3 inches in diameter--spray them gold--hot glue the jewelry, buttons, keys, and zippers, etc. all over lid--she calls them trinket boxes ad sells them for $5.
karaheart: says a very old friend of hers, who has since passed away, made some very unique things out of old jewelry--one thing she that sold very well were framed Christmas Trees--she would take a frame that had a back on it and she would draw out a tree--then she would drill out holes for lights--she stuck with the white lights through--then she would glue on, with hot glue, pieces of jewelry--sometimes she would use all pearls to make it all white or all gold or all silver--when she was done, they were beautiful!
Good Luck!
