Default Great Vanilla Salt Scrub
Old 08-01-2006, 02:52 PM   #1 (permalink)

It's really simple and cheap to make. I spent $20 on Christmas gifts for 12 people last year, mostly on the containers for the scrub and candles to go with them. I hope you like it as much as they did!

Ingredients:

4 cups salt

1 cup olive oil

1/2 cup fine chopped oatmeal (I've found that a quick pulse with a coffee grinder or food processor)

Vanilla or other exract of your choice to scent (or taste?)

Mix all inrgedients together well (hands work best for this). Store in airtight containers.

Note: Yes, the ingredients are edible and natural. No, I don't recommend eating it. But, the good news is, unless your child is allergic to anything in it, if your child does eat it, there shouldn't be any problems.

I also like to adjust the salt/olive oil proportion and I've found that the following substitutes for vanilla work well:

Cinnamon

Anise extract (or ground star anise, anise seed, etc)

Orange extract

Melted cocoa butter

If you mix the orange and cocoa butter, it smells like the chocolate oranges; the cinnamon/cocoa butter combination smells like mexican chocolate; and vanilla/cinnamon smells like something between french toast, cinnamon sugar, and a cinnabon.

Sorry about the amount of time it took me to respond. I started a new job and have had very little time.

I got my containers from a stor found in MA, RI, and CT called "Ocean State Job Lot". I used little jars made for making the jarred votive candles. I realized after the 3rd batch that glass is a bad idea for bathrooms.

So, I started recycling lotion/body scrub bottles (the kind with the twist-off or flip-top caps) that I washed and made knitted recycled plastic bag cozies for (I used a lighter to shrink/melt the edges around the cap area so that it wouldn't come off). I filled the ones with the flip-top caps by twisting off the full cap, then using a ziploc bag with a corner cut off as a funnel type thing, and did something similar to the ones with the twist-off caps (I used the bag more as a pastry bag to pump filling into a donut or pastry). The twist-off caps were a little tougher to fill, as they filled more slowly.

Great recipe. Thanks for sharing. I would recommend using some kind of preservative with this though, if not make sure no water gets into the item you don't want mold or bacteria growing in it.

Salt and Sugar scrubs are great for your skin and body. My girls use it one a week in the shower. It helps get all the dead skin off and generates new skin growth and really cleans the pores and with my two teenagers that is a big thing. lol

I never really cared about that kind of stuff as a teenager. I shaved all the necssary areas and that was it.
