I saw this excellent craft idea. I asked the crafter how to and she told me but I can't make it work. She had dyed popcorn kernels different colors and put it in glass jars. She told me that it was all good to eat because it was dyed with food coloring. You just air pop the kernels and the hull part stays dyed and the rest is white like regular popcorn. I just dyed my popcorn but the dye isnt sticking to the kernels. Help Please.... this is supposed to be a christmas present.

Phaidra,
I found several references about dyeing corn kernels, but no specify directions about the exact amount. One said to use food coloring with alcohol, but she was using the kernels to glue on a pinecone as ornaments. Another said to let them sit in warm food coloring for 30 min., then lay out to dry thoroughly in a warm room or in a 200 degree or less oven (turning often) for an hour or so. Another one said to go to dollar store and buy it in the bulk bags--that it was cheaper than all that work! LOL

While I was looking I found the "recipe" for making colored popped corn to eat.
1 bag microwave plain popcorn
powdered food colorings of your choice**
**Liquid food coloring will make your popcorn soggy. You can purchase powdered food colorings in cake decorating shops.
Prepare the popcorn as directed on the bag.
Remove popcorn from bag, separating into plastic bags.
Make sure that all kernels are removed.
Spray the popcorn with butter flavor nonstick spray.
Add a small amount of food coloring to each bag of popcorn.
Close the bag and seal well.
Shake the bag until all popcorn is evenly covered with color.
Empty each bag of popcorn into a large bowl, and voila!! You have crazy color popcorn.
