I think if you sewed the handles to the fabric before glueing it that would work!!
These would only be evening purses I would thing! Not everyday ones!!

I just had another idea and that is to put the straps on the out side!! You could make them short or long and I'm sure if you used the proper glue or sewed them to the fabric before glueing it down it would work great!!!
