Cut the width you want your bag to be, stitch the sides of each piece so they don't unravel, then turn each piece inside out and pin the sides together, then pin the bottom part and stitch them on the sewing machine. Do the same with a piece of cotton fabric to make a lining, which you will just drop into the bag, then tack it by hand on the inside so it stays put. Don't forget to make a flap out of more sweater fabric to stitch onto the top of the bag. Sew a pretty button on the flap of the bag and on the front of the bag, attach black stretch elastic, the thin kind, make a loop out of it to loop over the button. If you want your bag to be stiffer, ask at your fabric store. I'm not sure of the name of the stuff, but it is a stiff white fabric, and you would sew that to your lining before placing the lining in the bag. Now, for the strap, there you can use your imagination, whatever you desire, beads are just one idea. Here's where you get to be original, make it your own unique piece.
A tweed type sweater would make a great bag, anything with texture.
