Default Are knitting stitch names and techniques consistent?

Are knitting stitch names and techniques consistent?

For example, with crochet if you asked someone who crocheted 100 years ago, someone from England and someone from the United States how to make a double crochet; you might get three very different answers.

If I took that same group of people and asked them about knitting stitches, would they provide up to three different answers or would they all say the same thing?

I'm asking because I've found some vintage knitting patterns from England and am wondering if what they are calling something may not be what a modern-day knitter might call that stitch.
