Post Hubby bought me a sewing machine, HELP

There is one problem, I have never sewn a stitch in my life.
I have been reading a lot about sewing but, if anybody has any
hints or help, it would be definately appreciated. He just bought me they call it a Singer starter for newbies to sewing. I live 5 minutes from Joanne Fabric and craft super store. I really don't want to spend the money for the classes because a friend joined one of the classes and said it was not worth it all all.
Also, I need a list of all the things I need like a seam ripper, etc.
