I have a SCS and have had it since 1991. I think people are confusing the TENS unit with the SCS. The SCS is implanted inside your body. It has been a great relief for me. After 2 back surgeries, I was rear ended by a 16 year old boy who only had his license for 2 weeks. The implant has helped a great deal. It dfoesn't take all the pain away but it does make life better. I have to have the battery changed about every 5 years although the last time they said the battery will last 6 years. It is an outpatient procedure. I hope you have as good of relief as I have had with mine.
