Ah tin tiles. My friend did this in her kitchen last year when they renovated. They are sharp looking. It was fairly easy with the one she had. They looked like tin but they were some other material that was easy to cut and measure. They just went into place with a contractor's adhesive. Really brought out the kitchen.

You could just also tile. They have so many wonderful tiles out there now. I love the small 1" by 1" glass tile, they come in so many great colors. They come on a sheet that is 12 x 12. Oh then there is the tumbled stone that is a real cool tile and gives it a real nice look.

Have fun. I wish I could get my kitchen done but the basement is first.
