If you want a cheap wire that will work for this go to the Dollar store and get the kind used in the hardwear or garden section, as for a pattern....Hummmmm I just play with the wire till I get the shape I like!! I think it would be ok if all are different, but near the same size!! An easy way to keep them about the same siz is to cut the same length of wire and create a figure 8 and shape from there!! It may take a bit of fiddling as to what size, but once you are sure, cut the wire all the same size and work from there!!
