| Hello! Of course I wouldn't mind sharing! All Day Apple Butter 5 1/2 pounds Apples - peeled, cored and chopped 4 cups White sugar 2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp nutmeg Dash of Allspice 1/4 tsp salt (optional) Put the apples in the slow cooker. Mix the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and salt in a medium bowl. Pour the mixture over the apples and stir well. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour. Reduce heat to low and cook 9 to 11 hours. Stir occasionally. It's done when it is thickened and dark brown. Uncover and continue to cook it for another hour on low. Stir with a whisk to make it smoother. You can refrigerate, freeze or can it. Just make sure it is covered. I buy my apples from the local orchard. I always buy seconds because they are much much cheaper. $4 a bushel usually. A thicker type of apple seems to make it thicken up better. I prefer to use Mutsu apples. I put in the bruised areas since it really doesn't matter, just as long as the bruise isn't too soft and splitting the skin. I don't add the salt either. Doesn't seem to change the taste too much. It sounds like a lot of work and it can be but it is definately worth it. I usually have it in the slow cooker in about an hour. We live around the Amish and my grandparents love mine more than theirs. I didn't think anyone could cook better than the Amish!! Enjoy!!:D |
