Default Ovarian Cancer Facts
Old 02-25-2007, 08:57 PM   #1 (permalink)

As some of you may have read in my Community Support post on Friday, we recently attended a funeral for a close friend. She was 38. She received a diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer 4 years ago. It was too late. She had a rough go of it. She is finally at peace, but was way too young. She had a request before her death that the awareness for Ovarian Cancer be promoted. So, I am following her wishes and instructions. Please, everyone, be aware of your bodies.

Ovarian Cancer Facts:

~Occurs in 1 out of 57 women

~Today, most women are diagnosed when the chance of survival for 5 years is about 25%. Early Detectin can improve the survival rate to over 90%

~Symptoms are subtle, persistent, and usually increase over time.

~A Pap smear is NOT at test for Ovarian Cancer; it detects Cervical Cancer

Ovarian Cancer Symptoms:

~Abdominal pressure, bloating, or discomfort

~Constipation, diarrhea or frequent urination

~Nausea, indigestion, or gas

~Abnormal bleeding

~Unusual fatigue, backaches

~Unexplained weight loss or gain

~Shortness of breath

TAKE ACTION if any symptoms last more than 2-3 weeks. Experts suggest a combinaion pelvic/rectal exam, CA 125 blood test, and a transvaginal sonogram.
