We lived in Germany for three years while I was growing up. I was in grade 3 by then - and no longer believed in "Santa". In Germany, the tradition is to open the gifts on the 24th, after going to church. They don't decorate until then, and then leave them up until the feast of Epiphany (the twelve days of Christmas). Our family modified that tradition slightly. We go to a midnight service together and then come home and open our presents then. Even now, when I no longer live at home, I still stay overnight on the 24th and we follow this tradition.

Friends are angels who lift us to our feet

when our wings have trouble

remembering how to fly.
