Making School Bags

The bag pattern I started with was from a totally wonderful and well illustrated free Messenger Bag pattern from Larissa at mmmcrafts.
The bag wasn’t perfectly suited for a school bag however, so I made a few minor modifications. Larissa’s finished bag is 12″ x 12″, not quite wide enough to hold school books. So, I added an extra 2 inches to the width, and an additional 2″ width to the inside and outside pockets. I added two pencil holders to the inside pocket, and because the girls will be toting around books in their bags a Pellon Fusible Fleece to give the bag more weight and stability. Some other minor changes was to add a small loop near the side handle because my girls love to hang key chains or small toys from their bag. I also made the strap two colored, but that is because I was a little short on fabric. I only had around 3 inches left of the long 45″ strips and I did not want narrow straps! So I used the lining fabric on the reverse, and I love how it looks.
Here are the dimensions of the pieces for the bags I made:
strap, cut 2- 3″ x 45″ (For Lily and Emma I had to cut the strap down a lot… You customize the length when the bag is nearly done.)
body and lining, cut 1 each- 16″ x 25″
Pellon fusible fleece, cut 1 – 16″ x 25″
flap and flap lining, cut 1 each- 14″ x 13.5″ (I used a cereal bowl to round my corners, Larissa recommends a 6.5″ circle. I placed my fabrics right sides together, traced the rounded edge of the bowl and cut out the rounded corner of both the flap and the lining at the same time.)
outside pocket, cut 2 – 11″ x 7.5″ (again I cut one from the body fabric and one from the lining fabric)
inside pocket, cut 2 – 11″ x 5.5″ (ditto)
key chain loop, cut 1 – 1.5″ x 3″ (press in half, wrong sides together, then press a hem on both sides evenly. Stitch close the the edge)

I posted lots of photos and step-by-step instructions here as well: http://makeitdo.wordpress.com/2009/0...g-school-bags/

Print pattern file

Cut:
16 - 3" squares (I used black)
6 - 3"x 8-1/2" Strips - Red Plaid
6 - 3" x 8-1/2" Strips - Black Plaid
4 - 3" x 8-1/2" Strips - Blue Plaid
8 - 3" x 8-1/2" Strips - Green Plaid
9 - 8-1/2" Squares - Muslin
Backing - 1 Piece 35" x 35"
Applique:
Print and Enlarge the above pattern file to the size that fits best on your quilt.

For the Pocket - I used a rectangle and cut off the corners on the bottom - being sure to leave 1/4" for turning the edge under when I sewed it on.
Embroider:
I embroidered the word GROW using needlepoint floss - 3 ply. Also embroidered the holes on the spout and the water drops, eyes, whiskers, nose and on the watering can label I embroidered:
BABY SHOWER
July 18, 1999

Be sure to save the GROW square to put the baby's information like: Name, birthday, weight and length... DON'T Let anyone sign this square! Use Pigma Permanent Pens and heat set your signatures...

Instructions:
To make rows: Lay all pieces out before stitching. - Top row example - With right sides facing, join a red plaid with a muslin square. Add green plaid to other side then a muslin square, then green plaid, then muslin square, then red plaid. Make three rows this way except the colors will be different on second row.

To make lattice strips: With right sides facing together stitch first black square to plaid strip then a square, strip, etc. Make four rows this way - don't forget that the second row is different colors.

To join rows: With right sides facing, stitch one pieced strip to top edge of a row of blocks. Continue to join rows, separated by strips n this way.

NOTE: Be sure to press open your seams as you sew.

Pockets: Using the pattern (see Applique information) Turn 1/4" around the entire pocket. Stitch the top seam then pin to the muslin square. Stitch around both sides and bottom leaving top open. I embelished the pockets with little bunnies and added a 1/2 moon with the two little bunnies sitting on it. Be creative. I also added another row to the side and bottom to make the quilter larger.

Applique, embroider and embelish - then pin, baste, quilt and bind...

This was a big hit at the shower and also gave the Mommy to be a wonderful keepsake momento!

BODY:
Cut out body, legs, arms and ears from muslin.

Using 1/4" seam allowance, sew arms and legs.

Stuff with fibre fill to dotted line.

Sew ear pieces.

Put two head and body pieces together, sew, starting at bottom edge, inserting arms at shoulder level and ears on top of head where you see x's.

Stuff head and body firmly. Insert legs at bottom of body where you see x's and sew across to close body seam.

Using acrylic paint, paint eyes and nose on where marked. Leave to dry.
DRESS:
Cut out two pieces of print on fold of fabric. Placing right sides together, sew (using 1/4" seam allowance also) shoulder seam.

Sew along bottom of sleeve and down side. Repeat for other side.
TRIM:
Gather up lace scrap and sew to neckline front opening. Add ribbon rose, button or bow.

Sew lace around bottom edge of dress.

Thread darning needle with narrow 1/8" ribbon and baste around sleeve openings.

Put dress on Emily. Tie ribbon into bows at sleeve bottom. Adjust gathers.

Tie ribbons into bows around her ears and ankles. (Do rabbits have ankles?)

She might also look nice with a straw hat. You could also put a touch of blush inside her ears and on her cheeks.

Print pattern file

Preparing patterns:
Click on the pattern file above to print it. The pattern is 50% of the actual size it needs to be.

Cut pattern pieces along solid cutting lines. Tape or paste the arm (3) and head (2) to the body (1) section, overlaping where indicated.
Note:
All pattern pieces include 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Body:
Fold one piece of burlap in half with short ends together. Place body piece (1) on fold and cut. Repeat with other piece of burlap.

Thread machine with heavy-duty thread. Using a small stitch, sew around body leaving an opening as indicated for turning. Clip curves and turn to the right side. Firmly stuff arms and legs to dotted lines on pattern. Sew across dotted lines. Stuff head and body. Sew opening closed.
Hair:
Cut one strand of jute into six 3 ½-inch lengths. Fold each piece in half and glue across top of head for bangs. Divide remaining lengths into three groups and braid. Cut two 10-inch pieces of ribbon and tie a bow 1-inch from each end of the braid. Center the braid on top of the head over the bangs and glue. Glue the hat to the back of the head. Dip the eraser part of a pencil into the black paint and dot on eyes. Paint a thin-curved line for the mouth. Cover the cheek area with blush.
Dress:
Cut out pieces (4 and 5) from the calico fabric. Cut out a 9" x 34" piece of the calico fabric for the skirt.

Cut center line on back bodice piece (5) for opening. Leave front piece whole. Sew bodice back to bodice front at the shoulder seams. With right sides together sew lace to neckline. Clip curves and press lace up.

Gather on short side of each sleeve (4) as indicated on pattern piece. With right sides together stitch to arm hole. Stitch side\sleeve seams. Make a narrow hem on edge of each sleeve.

Gather long edge of skirt to fit bodice. Pin and sew to bodice waist. Sew back seam of skirt to within 2 inches of waist. Press seam open. Press under seam allowance on upper skirt, bodice back and lace. Make a narrow hem on bottom edge of skirt.

With two strands of embroidery floss, thread a needle and make a gathering stitch around sleeves, ½-inch from bottom edge. Place dress on doll and gather embroidery floss tight around wrists of doll. Tie. Fluff up the sleeve. Hand stitch the back opening together.

Paint wooden heart shape to match the dress. When dry, glue it onto the front bodice.
Pantaloon and apron:
Cut out piece (6 and 7) from muslin.
Pantaloon:
With right sides together, sew front to back on one side only. Press under waistband 1/4-inch. Using a zig-zag stitch, sew elastic to inside of waist, stretching elastic as you sew. Sew other side seam catching in the elastic at top. Sew in seam. Turn right side out.

Make a narrow hem along bottom of leg. Using heavy-duty beige thread make a gathering stitch ½-inch above bottom of each leg. Put pantaloons on doll and gather thread tight around leg. Tie.
Apron:
Make a narrow hem on sides and bottom edges of apron piece. Press under 2 inches along top of apron. Sew two seams, 1 inch and 3/4 inch from the fold, forming a casing. Stamp hearts along bottom as indicated.

Thread remaining 1/4-inch-wide ribbon through casing. Gather apron and tie on doll.
Finishing:
Make a bow with ½-inch-wide ribbon for back of hat. Glue in place. Arrange flowers around ribbon and glue.

Slip the loop attached to the book around the wrist of the doll and pull to tighten.

Grandma's Treasure Box Chairs

Print pattern file

Preparing patterns:
Cut pattern pieces along solid cutting lines. (To make the patterns easier to trace onto the fabric you may glue the pattern sheets onto poster board before cutting them out).

Note: To make larger or smaller chairs you can increase or decrease the pattern using a graphics program.
Marking and cutting the fabric:
Fold the fabric in half wrong side out (see figure 1). Lay out the fabric pattern pieces, ½" apart, placing ruffle on fold as shown. Trace around all pieces except ruffle and tab pieces (these will be your stitching lines).

Cut ruffle and tab pieces along cutting lines. Cut all other fabric pieces ¼ inch from the line traced onto the fabric.

Marking and cutting the cardboard:

On the cardboard, trace around each of the insert pieces. Label and cut out.
Back / side section:
Stitch around the back / side section, along tracing line, leaving the bottom open. Trim the seam allowances to 1/8 inch and clip the V-areas. Turn the piece right side out. Making sure seams are exactly at the edges, pin the layers together. Stitch along stitching lines to form three slots (see figure 2). Insert the back and side cardboard pieces into the slots. Add small pieces of stuffing to evenly pad one side of each cardboard form. Stitch the edge closed. Trim next to stitching using pinking shears or zigzag across raw edges. You can also use a surger to finish the bottom edge. Set pieces aside.
Front / seat section:
Form the pull-tab by first pressing one strip in half lengthwise, right side out. Then open it and press each long cut edge to the center crease. Fold the strip in half again and press. Stitch along the long open side close to the edge. Fold into a flat loop and join the cut ends with basting stitches. Pin or baste the pull-tab to the right side of front seat section (see figure 3). With right sides together stitch around curved edge of front/seat section, along tracing line, leaving bottom edge open. Trim seam allowance to 1/8 inch and turn piece right side out. Insert cardboard seat section and add small amounts of stuffing to pad one side of the cardboard seat. Do not add stuffing below the stitching line. Insert cardboard front section (do not add padding) and finish bottom edge as you did the back/side section. Top stitch along stitching lines between the two cardboard pieces.
Base:
Stitch around three sides of the base section, along tracing line, leaving one side open. Trim seam allowances to 1/8 inch and clip corners. Turn right side out. Insert base cardboard section and finish the remaining edge as you did the back/side section.
Assembling the chair sections:
Fold the back/side section along stitching. Attach the seat/front section using hand stitching (see figure 4). Using a glue gun attach base to bottom of chair folding over the finished edges (see figure 5).
Ruffle:
Make a narrow 1/8-inch hem along both long edges of ruffle. Gather top edge by machine basting (loosen the top tension slightly) ¼ inch from edge. Pull the bobbin thread and gather evenly to fit around the chair. With the glue gun starting at center back and folding under raw edges, glue ruffle to bottom edge of chair so the bottom of the ruffle is even with the bottom edge of chair.

1. Cut 16 3" squares
2. Sew 4 rows of 4 squares
3. Sew the 4 rows together
4. Fold patchwork in half, cut out heart shaped motif about 10" high x 9" wide. (This is approximate measurements.)
5. Cut out thin batting same size as heart
6. Center batting and heart on background piece 11" high x 10" wide. I used muslin.
7. Pin and blanket stitch around entire heart
8. Sew 2" borders to sides, then top and bottom
9. Place backing piece 15" x 14" down on top of heart, right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam around outside edge of borders, leaving about 4" opening to turn.
10. Turn right side out and hand stitch opening close.
11. Sew buttons on corner of each square (optional)
