Chrismon Snowflake Ornaments

Print pattern file.
Pattern
Click on the link above to print the snowflake pattern. Using small sharp pointed scissors, cut out the large square pattern. With design facing up, fold the square pattern in half, then in quarters. Cut along the grey lines. Carefully cut out the grey shaded areas. Unfold carefully. There will be an inner design and an outer design. With pattern lines facing away, push the inner design away from you and press the folds to conform. Now pull the outer design towards you and press the folds to conform. This will give your ornament it's three dimensional look! You can spray it with a white pearlescent spray to make it more durable. Or, gold leaf it for a unique effect! Spray coat with a clear coat when completed.

You can enlarge the pattern for younger children, making it easier to cut. You can also print the pattern on a thicker specialty paper. Try a beautiful white linen. Or use some Japanese specialty paper in white with gold paint flecks on it. (I found some at a local art shop and the effect was awesome

About Author
Sarah Keith is the owner of ChristianCrafters.com. While making paper cut out snowflakes with my children one Christmas, I wanted my designs to reflect the spiritual nature of the season. By trial and error I incorporated Chrismons into each snowflake design. Hence, Chrismon Snowflake Ornaments were developed! The special way they are folded and cut gives them their three dimensional quality. Chrismon Snowflakes are reminiscent of German and Swiss Scherenschnitte, (the religious art/craft of intricate paper cutting).

Instructions:
Take 2 small bowls and place 2-3 tablespoons of water in each. Add 3-4 drops of food coloring (color 1) to one dish and 3-4 drops of food coloring (color 2) to the second dish . Scrunch the coffee filters up and place one in each dish so they are covered with the water. You can remove the filters right away for a light color or leave them in for a while for a darker color. Remove the coffee filters when ready and squeeze the excess coloring out over a sink. Lay the filters flat to dry on a paper towel.

When the filters are dry, take the center color and fold it in half to make a half circle. Fold again to make a quarter pie shape. Fold twice more so you have a narrow wedge. Cut a curve around the wedge 1/2 inch from the wide end. Repeat with the outer color except cut the curve right at the wide edge. This will give you large flower shape and a smaller flower shape.

Paint the skewer green and let dry.

Center the small flower shape over the large flower shape. Poke the skewer through the center of the circles and slide the skewer all the way through leaving 1/2 inch in the flower. Twist the bottom 1/2 inch of the flower around the skewer and tape with clear tape to hold tight. Push the petals down adjusting them until you are happy with the way they look.

Instructions:
Cut the following pieces from brown paper grocery bags, saving the gusseted bottoms for later use:

30 strips, 8" by 1/2"
1 strip, 28" by 2"
1 strip, 28" by 1/2"
1 rectangle, 14" by 6"
2 rectangles, 28" by 6"
2 circles, 8 1/2"
Paint one side only with Ivy Green of pieces B, E, and F. Use two coats, drying between applications. Allow to dry.

Seal B, E and F with one coat of Mod Podge.

Handle:
Cut outer piece of one of the embroidery hoops in half, discarding the piece with the screw.

Fold piece D over and over and over again until it is only 1" wide (14" long). Secure with tacky glue.

Hold paper to wood with clothes pins until glue dries.

Paint entire handle with Ivy Green. Allow to try.

Seal handle with Mod Podge.

Basket Bottom:
Glue unpainted sides of F pieces together with Mod Podge. Allow to dry.

Cut 1/2" tabs around circle so that piece resembles a sprocket.

Bend tabs upward and place circle inside a non-screwed piece of embroidery hoop.

Glue tabs to inside of hoop with Mod Podge.

Use Mod Podge to glue piece C over tabs to secure. Allow to dry.

Basket Sides:
Lay one of E rectangles on cutting board and using ruler as a straightedge, cut slits, 1/2" apart, along rectangle. Leave 1" uncut on ends of rectangle.

Weave A strips through slits, alternating starting point of each row. Secure ends with a dot of tacky glue.

Trim edges evenly.

Glue woven piece to other E rectangle, with bag bottoms in between for reinforcement. Let dry.
Assembling:
Wrap woven piece around remaining non-screwed piece of embroidery hoop. Use Tacky Glue to adhere hoop to inside of top of woven piece, clamping with clothespins as you work your way around.

Gently insert basket bottom inside woven piece and glue into place with Tacky Glue.

Glue along side seam of woven piece.

Fold B piece in half lengthwise, painted side up, and use Mod Podge to glue it to the top of the basket with one-half on the outside rim and the other half covering embroidery hoop inside rim.

Clamp B piece in place with clothespins until glue dries.

Attach handle to basket by using Tacky Glue to adhere 1" of each end of handle inside basket. Clamp in place until dry.

Make bow with raffia.

Use Tacky Glue to adhere raffia bow, bay leaves, and apple slices to handle.

Make a gift tag from scrap of brown paper, fold in half, and punch hole in the top corner.

Glue decorative apple to front of gift tag with Tacky Glue.

Attach Gift tag to basket with raffia.

Fill basket with items of choice. I filled mine with a mug, kitchen towels, tea, and a spiced apple sachet.

Print this pattern

Head and Body
Glue one end of dowel; slip end into hole in wooden bead; allow it to dry. Cut a 10" length of rust twisted-paper ribbon, untwist it and fold it in half crosswise (body). Using tip of scissors, cut a small slit at center of fold; insert free end of dowel through slit until head rests on body. Glue head to body.

Underskirt
Cut seven 8 1/2" lengths of rust twisted-paper ribbon; untwist them. Apply glue to one side of one strip end; attach strip to dowel about 1 1/4" from head; wrap glued end of strip around dowel. Repeat to attach remaining strips, overlapping edges to create a circular base; let dry. After attaching the underskirt strips, trim the bottom before you spread the paper out so that the base will be even and stand up better. Stand witch upright, bending out bottom of underskirt for balance.
Arms and Sleeves
Cut a 7" length of rust twisted-paper ribbon (arm) set aside. Cut two 5" lengths of rust twist, untwist. Roll one 5" piece lengthwise into a loose cylinder; glue along length wise edge (sleeve). Slip sleeve over one end of arm so that twisted end extends 1/4" beyond sleeve (hand). Apply 1/2" wide band of glue 1/4" from end of hand; press lower end of sleeve onto glue to make a 1/2" wide cuff. With your thumbs against cuff, work upper sleeve down over cuff about 1/2", creating a puffed sleeve. Glue top of sleeve to center of arm. Repeat to make and attach other sleeve. Center arms under body next to head; glue arms to dowel. (Side of dowel to which arms are glued will be back.) Fold body over arms; glue body front and back to underskirt.

Overskirt
Cut six 6 1/2" lengths and five 8 1/2" lengths of natural twisted-paper ribbon for overskirt; untwist. Using pencil, carbon paper and full-size pattern, trace outline of short strips onto each 6 1/2" length of twist and outline of long strips onto each 8 1/2" length; cut out strips. Attach long strips to underskirt first, keeping upper ends of strips even: Glue top of each strip; press strip into place below sleeves, overlapping strips around body. Attach short strips in same manner. Starting at back and pulling wire slightly, wrap wire around body six times, 1/4" from top of overskirt. Twist ends of wire together to secure; bend ends flat against back. Bend out some overskirt strips to add fullness to skirt fold back one lengthwise edge on two or three adjoining strips to give skirt windswept look.

Cape
Cut two 12" lengths of black twisted-paper ribbon; untwist. Glue pieces together along one lengthwise side, overlapping edges about 1/4". Evenly trim corners on one short end glue one side of opposite short end; trap this end around back of shoulders; press in place.

Collar
Cut a 4" length of black twisted-paper ribbon; untwist. Using white dressmaker's carbon, trace full size pattern for collar onto the piece. Cut out collar, slitting where indicated. Apply glue around base of neck; slip collar around neck; press in place, overlapping ends at back. Glue ends together.
Hair and Hat
Apply glue around top, back and sides of head. Form a mall nest of Spanish moss and invert it over head; press in place. Cut a 4" piece of black twisted-paper ribbon; untwist and cut to make a 4" square. Fold two adjacent sides of the square toward each other, overlapping edges about 1/2" to form a cone; glue edges together. Trim bottom of cone to make even. Bend bottom out slightly; apply glue along underside; press onto head; twist tip. Cut a 4" length of black twisted paper ribbon; untwist. Using dressmaker's carbon, trace full-size pattern or brim onto the piece of twist; cut out. Cut out center hole; slip brim over top of hat. Glue to base of hat top.

Pumpkin
Poke a hole in each end of the 1 1/4" Styrofoam ball with a pencil or knitting needle. Cut a 2 1/2" length of orange twisted paper. Open the paper and wrap it around the ball with the hole at the top and bottom. Using the knitting needle push the ends of the paper down into the holes on the top and bottom of the ball. Cut a 1 1/2" piece of green chenille stick and curl it around the knitting needle. Remove and glue one end in the top hole of the ball.

Finishing Touches
Bend left arm, glue pumpkin to inside of arm. Glue handle of broom to front of right cuff and bottom of broom to front of skirt.

Instructions:
Cut 2 ovals from the pink construction paper. Be sure they are the exact same size.

On one oval draw and color a bunny face.

On the other oval write Happy Easter and color to look like a decorated egg. Use your imagination and have fun.

Cut the egg oval in half lengthwise. Place the two halves over the bunny face. Punch a small hole in the top corner of each half and secure together with the brads (see picture).

On the back of the card write something nice and sign your name. Give it to someone you love.

Fun Placemats

Instructions:
Take an existing placemat for the template and a corrugated cardboard box. Trace the placemat on the box, and cut out for the base.

Pick out a fabric swatch that you want to use for your placemat, and cut out using the placemat template you created.

Spray adhesive on the cardboard and cover it with the fabric. Take a dinner plate, soup bowl, salad plate, cup, salad and dinner fork, knife, soup spoon and teaspoon and use these as templates to cut shapes out of construction paper. As an added step, write the names of the dishes and utensils on each piece, then glue them down to the fabric covered mat. Finish it off by covering with clear contact paper to make it water resistant (you can wipe it off if something spills).

Some ideas: He chose camouflage fabric for his cover, then used black and green paper for dishes/utensils. To label the black items, he took off white paper and colored with some brown to look "camouflage-like" and used this for labels. Also, used this for the napkin (don't forget this!!)

He enjoyed making them and has been setting the table happily ever since.
