You will need quilting paper; which can be purchased at most hobby supply stores, or you can cut your own 1/8-inch strips in lengths of about 8 inches. Also required is a quilling tool or a tooth- pick (the quilting tool makes tighter scrolls), craft glue, straight pins, a ruler and a quilling board, which is a piece of corrugated cardboard with wax paper wrapped around it.

Hold the quilting tool in one hand and with the thumb and index finger of the other hand press the end of the paper around the tool and begin rolling the paper. Roll tightly, keeping the edges even.

All rolls begin with a loose circle and are shaped by pinching one or both sides. Here are some basic scrolls for you to practice...

Remove roll from tool and glue end.

Remove roll from tool, let it loosen about twice its size and glue end.

Pinch one side of roll.
Pinch on opposite sides of roll.
Roll from one end.

Folded Treasure Boxes

Instructions:
These boxes are so simple and lots of fun. They make great gift boxes or just use them to store your treasrue. Be creative... You can use a variety of papers including gift wrap, the newspaper, comics, magazines, brown paper bags, double sided origami paper, maps, greeting cards, calendars etc. Also be creative with your decorations. Here are some ideas... Jewels, buttons, stickers, sequins, paint, 3-dimentional paint, cutouts, yarn, glitter, markers, fabric, felt, ribbon, beads, etc.

Cut two sheets of paper one 1/4-inch larger than the other. The larger sheet will be the box top and the smaller sheet will be the box bottom. For the large box in the picture above we used a 6 3/4-inch square for the box bottom and a 7-inch square for the box top. The finished box was 2 1/2 wide and 1 1/4-inch high. You can make your box any size you wish. The directions for folding the box top and bottom are the same so follow the following directions to make your top and then repeat the directions for the bottom.

1. Using a ruler draw an X on the back side of a square of paper from corner to corner.

2. Fold one corner to the center of the X.

3. Fold the same section again to the center line.

4. Unfold and repeat with each of the other three corners.

5. Make four cuts into the square along the fold lines. Cut as indicated by the dark lines in the picture to the right.

6. Your paper should now look like this.

7. Fold in the sides that are shaped like big triangles and bend the corners to form the sides of the box.

8. Fold the other two sections over the sides and tuck them in on the inside of the box. Use a dab of glue to hold.

9. Repeat folding instructions for the second square of paper. Decorate the top and sides of your box as desired.

Chrismon Snowflake Ornaments

Print pattern file.
Pattern
Click on the link above to print the snowflake pattern. Using small sharp pointed scissors, cut out the large square pattern. With design facing up, fold the square pattern in half, then in quarters. Cut along the grey lines. Carefully cut out the grey shaded areas. Unfold carefully. There will be an inner design and an outer design. With pattern lines facing away, push the inner design away from you and press the folds to conform. Now pull the outer design towards you and press the folds to conform. This will give your ornament it's three dimensional look! You can spray it with a white pearlescent spray to make it more durable. Or, gold leaf it for a unique effect! Spray coat with a clear coat when completed.

You can enlarge the pattern for younger children, making it easier to cut. You can also print the pattern on a thicker specialty paper. Try a beautiful white linen. Or use some Japanese specialty paper in white with gold paint flecks on it. (I found some at a local art shop and the effect was awesome

About Author
Sarah Keith is the owner of ChristianCrafters.com. While making paper cut out snowflakes with my children one Christmas, I wanted my designs to reflect the spiritual nature of the season. By trial and error I incorporated Chrismons into each snowflake design. Hence, Chrismon Snowflake Ornaments were developed! The special way they are folded and cut gives them their three dimensional quality. Chrismon Snowflakes are reminiscent of German and Swiss Scherenschnitte, (the religious art/craft of intricate paper cutting).

Instructions:
Take 2 small bowls and place 2-3 tablespoons of water in each. Add 3-4 drops of food coloring (color 1) to one dish and 3-4 drops of food coloring (color 2) to the second dish . Scrunch the coffee filters up and place one in each dish so they are covered with the water. You can remove the filters right away for a light color or leave them in for a while for a darker color. Remove the coffee filters when ready and squeeze the excess coloring out over a sink. Lay the filters flat to dry on a paper towel.

When the filters are dry, take the center color and fold it in half to make a half circle. Fold again to make a quarter pie shape. Fold twice more so you have a narrow wedge. Cut a curve around the wedge 1/2 inch from the wide end. Repeat with the outer color except cut the curve right at the wide edge. This will give you large flower shape and a smaller flower shape.

Paint the skewer green and let dry.

Center the small flower shape over the large flower shape. Poke the skewer through the center of the circles and slide the skewer all the way through leaving 1/2 inch in the flower. Twist the bottom 1/2 inch of the flower around the skewer and tape with clear tape to hold tight. Push the petals down adjusting them until you are happy with the way they look.
Cut 1/2" tabs around circle so that piece resembles a sprocket.

Bend tabs upward and place circle inside a non-screwed piece of embroidery hoop.

Glue tabs to inside of hoop with Mod Podge.

Use Mod Podge to glue piece C over tabs to secure. Allow to dry.

Basket Sides:
Lay one of E rectangles on cutting board and using ruler as a straightedge, cut slits, 1/2" apart, along rectangle. Leave 1" uncut on ends of rectangle.

Weave A strips through slits, alternating starting point of each row. Secure ends with a dot of tacky glue.

Trim edges evenly.

Glue woven piece to other E rectangle, with bag bottoms in between for reinforcement. Let dry.
Assembling:
Wrap woven piece around remaining non-screwed piece of embroidery hoop. Use Tacky Glue to adhere hoop to inside of top of woven piece, clamping with clothespins as you work your way around.

Gently insert basket bottom inside woven piece and glue into place with Tacky Glue.

Glue along side seam of woven piece.

Fold B piece in half lengthwise, painted side up, and use Mod Podge to glue it to the top of the basket with one-half on the outside rim and the other half covering embroidery hoop inside rim.

Clamp B piece in place with clothespins until glue dries.

Attach handle to basket by using Tacky Glue to adhere 1" of each end of handle inside basket. Clamp in place until dry.

Make bow with raffia.

Use Tacky Glue to adhere raffia bow, bay leaves, and apple slices to handle.

Make a gift tag from scrap of brown paper, fold in half, and punch hole in the top corner.

Glue decorative apple to front of gift tag with Tacky Glue.

Attach Gift tag to basket with raffia.
