Rate Project:

  • 2 brown paper grocery bags
  • 2 wooden embroidery hoops, 8"
  • Ivy Green Acrylic Paint
  • Tacky Glue
  • Mod Podge? Gloss #CS11201
  • 2 preserved apple slices
  • 3 bay leaves
  • Raffia
  • Decorative apple with flat back, 1"
  • Craft knife
  • Cutting board
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • 2 sponge brushes, 1"
  • Hole puncher
  • Clothespins (pincher style)

Cut the following pieces from brown paper grocery bags, saving the gusseted bottoms for later use:

  1. 30 strips, 8" by 1/2"
  2. 1 strip, 28" by 2"
  3. 1 strip, 28" by 1/2"
  4. 1 rectangle, 14" by 6"
  5. 2 rectangles, 28" by 6"
  6. 2 circles, 8 1/2"

Paint one side only with Ivy Green of pieces B, E, and F. Use two coats, drying between applications. Allow to dry.

Seal B, E and F with one coat of Mod Podge.

Cut outer piece of one of the embroidery hoops in half, discarding the piece with the screw.

Fold piece D over and over and over again until it is only 1" wide (14" long). Secure with tacky glue.

Hold paper to wood with clothes pins until glue dries.

Paint entire handle with Ivy Green. Allow to try.

Seal handle with Mod Podge.

Basket Bottom:

Glue unpainted sides of F pieces together with Mod Podge. Allow to dry.

Cut 1/2" tabs around circle so that piece resembles a sprocket.

Bend tabs upward and place circle inside a non-screwed piece of embroidery hoop.

Glue tabs to inside of hoop with Mod Podge.

Use Mod Podge to glue piece C over tabs to secure. Allow to dry.

Basket Sides:

Lay one of E rectangles on cutting board and using ruler as a straightedge, cut slits, 1/2" apart, along rectangle. Leave 1" uncut on ends of rectangle.

Weave A strips through slits, alternating starting point of each row. Secure ends with a dot of tacky glue.

Trim edges evenly.

Glue woven piece to other E rectangle, with bag bottoms in between for reinforcement. Let dry.

Wrap woven piece around remaining non-screwed piece of embroidery hoop. Use Tacky Glue to adhere hoop to inside of top of woven piece, clamping with clothespins as you work your way around.

Gently insert basket bottom inside woven piece and glue into place with Tacky Glue.

Glue along side seam of woven piece.

Fold B piece in half lengthwise, painted side up, and use Mod Podge to glue it to the top of the basket with one-half on the outside rim and the other half covering embroidery hoop inside rim.

Clamp B piece in place with clothespins until glue dries.

Attach handle to basket by using Tacky Glue to adhere 1" of each end of handle inside basket. Clamp in place until dry.

Make bow with raffia.

Use Tacky Glue to adhere raffia bow, bay leaves, and apple slices to handle.

Make a gift tag from scrap of brown paper, fold in half, and punch hole in the top corner.

Glue decorative apple to front of gift tag with Tacky Glue.

Attach Gift tag to basket with raffia.

Fill basket with items of choice. I filled mine with a mug, kitchen towels, tea, and a spiced apple sachet.
